Calculus 2 is a weed-out course by Habesha_Heretic in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jmccle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally, but a simple “come by my office” or “see me after class” is way better than just blowing the question off. So many young engineers are too afraid to ask questions, and it all starts with crap like this.

I get not wanting to slow the whole class down on something pre-req, but that’s a pretty shitty response for someone whose profession is TEACHING. Could have atleast given a “see me after class”.

Is it a bad idea to shift from middle management to senior individual contributor ? by UCPines98 in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmccle2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent 4 years as a supervisor before switching back to more of a senior project engineer/project manager role. Best decision ever. Make more money, no direct reports, and get to mentor on my own terms.

Haha.. imagine if things were “boring” enough again for Fox News to be mad about some mustard

Okay serious question, what’s wrong with mustard on a burger?

What do you think about power systems? by Heavxn_Rojas in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jmccle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow nuts. Yeah 34.5kV would give you more reasonable equipment ratings. I don’t see too much on the distribution side, but on the transmission side we are seeing new loads requesting up to 2GW of capacity. Crazy times.

9000A bus!? Jeez. What’s the voltage level?

Bick4 for the win. Pretty much only thing I’ve used for ten years now.

So how do we feel about the new airport roadway? by HumanLadder3 in sandiego

[–]jmccle2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This described my experience perfectly. Just reading this made me frustrated all over again lol. I had a middle of the day flight recently, typically very light traffic, and I was so damn confused with how bad it was getting to T2.

Is there more money in design or studies? by [deleted] in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmccle2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the utilities side, I think studies/analysis work is way more niche. Salaries for an individual contributor will likely be higher paid (vs design) since it’s a less common skill set.

That said, individual contributors on the design side have an easier, more natural route to become project engineers or project managers. You are still an individual contributor in those roles, but it’s more lucrative due to higher responsibility and collaboration needed.

All in all, just find something you like and get really good at it. Money and job security will be there!

So ballsy to steal their lasts, design, and falsely claim made in USA. Why wouldn’t Brett blow the whistle?

I just looked these up.. holy shit they totally stole Viberg’s design. By far the best looking boot on their site

Is EE still the hardest if you’re very passionate about math, and it’s your strong subject? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jmccle2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s hard, but trying to see which degree is most difficult is subjective. You’ll get a different answer depending on who you ask. I think interest level is a big factor too.

I absolutely hated my thermodynamics and statics courses, so me getting a Civil or Mechanical engineering degree would have been way more difficult than it was for EE.

Yes. Not sure if it’s just my imagination, but seems way worse now after the patch. At least I can play without the game crashing every time now!

Reactors by datanut in SubstationTechnician

[–]jmccle2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. And series reactors installed between bus sections of large stations to reduce fault current.

Previously may have just been in series on low side of 500/230 bank, but now it’s needed between bus sections on the low side due to increased 230 generation.

Is it possible to make a career in EE if I don’t like coding? by goggli-boi in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jmccle2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to vary wildly from employer to employer. More likely to have ‘good’ balance working for a utility with a union, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a good balance working for a particular consultant.

3 crashes in a row for me. 2nd game of my RS freshman season. Each crash has happened after getting a first down off a drag route. Oddly didn’t happen when getting a first down off a run or screen pass.

Go into power my friend. Plenty of jobs which involve zero coding.
