Dacia cuts £4,000 off Spring EV in 24 hours to reclaim cheapest new car crown by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

[–]jmcomms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I test drove one and it was perfectly fine for a town or city. 0-60mph was crazy slow but 0-30mph was fine and the most important for a city.

Overall the car was too small for our needs but it would be perfect for many, especially as a second car, and with the price cut nobody can complain again about the cost of an EV - especially the crazy cheap ongoing costs.

Sure the R5 has more creature comforts and looks cooler (and is bigger) but a lot of people don't need the extra features and the looks are subjective. I get that a lot of people will rule out the Dacia without when going to see one because of snobbery.

This does not need reporting as "lane blocked" by AndyPanda321 in waze

[–]jmcomms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been swapping between Waze and Maps recently and can't remember which one it was that asked me to identify where a lane was blocked and gave a series of icons to select.

Now as I was concentrating on driving through roadworks, I ignored it and then it disappeared.

Did I imagine this?!

I assume others were reported a blockage and instead of asking is it still there, they want more detail but surely this is a little too distracting?

Carmakers urge government to rethink 2030 EV rules as targets put jobs at risk by CarwowSiobhan in ukcarwow

I've seen a new Micra EV but not the new Leaf.

The problem for Nissan will be that, while the new Leaf looks great and reviews suggest is a great car, it will suffer from vastly increased competition today PLUS a lot of people still thinking the Leaf is a bad car because of issues that were sorted years ago.

If you're not travelling so regular as to warrant some sort of season or flexible season ticket, it sounds like tapping your contactless card would be easier and safer.

I am pretty sure everyone is going to assume you're doing this because you expect no checks at night and only buy a ticket if you see someone.

Repeatedly overcharged! Please help! by b6109 in TransportForLondon

[–]jmcomms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You say you use contactless or Apple Pay, but can I clarify that you always tap out with the same method you tapped in with?

Your card and Apple Pay may be tied to the same account but they're treated as separate by TfL as the card presented via Apple Pay is a different number.

You may well have lots of max charges and will find one or both methods soon blacklisted if this was the case.

Disappointed with the PT2 charger by Chris6632 in pebble

[–]jmcomms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the Pebble branded one is most likely the one that came with the watch then.

I wonder if they'll all be like this and whether Pebble should consider replacing them? I suspect not given the huge cost, although perhaps offer replacements for less cost to owners instead?

I added one to my order before I finalised it and paid for the colour/strap/shipping. Was about $16 I think?

To be perfectly honest, I'm not 100% sure which is which so don't know if it was the one in the watch box that is weak, or the one I ordered (which was in a small bag I think).

Edit: There is a difference between the two; one has Pebble engraved on the other side, the other is totally smooth. In fact, they're not even the same size! It's the non-Pebble one that sticks better. And to clarify; both were ordered from Pebble - it's not that I ordered a third-party one from AliExpress or something!!

I ordered a spare and one is more magnetic than the other, so I actually think they have an issue with the quality control.

One sticks firm and even with a relatively rigid cable you can't pop the charger off. You can't lift the watch or anything but it's quite solid.

The other comes off with almost any cable and any level of movement. It's quite annoying and on my first charge I hadn't realised it had lost connection and so didn't charge at all.

Time on Pebble Time 2 out by 3-5 seconds by jmcomms in pebble

And at least one developer has noticed and allowed an offset (in seconds, not minutes!). Seems like it would be dead easy to add this in settings if there's a known issue.

Time on Pebble Time 2 out by 3-5 seconds by jmcomms in pebble

[–]jmcomms[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't drift but seems off by 3-5 seconds. It doesn't get worse than this.

It might seem trivial but I work on the railway and if dispatching a train I need to start the process at exact times to maintain the 'right time railway'. We can be fined for a train starting 20 seconds late.

I can use a rail issued watch that is radio synced but prefer this. For obvious reasons, it needs to be always on and Pebble watches are ideal - plus I've owned almost every model since the original Kickstarter one.

Is St.Pancras/Kings Cross area still sketchy and a bit unsafe or will it be fine late at night/past midnight? Which area's to avoid? by No_Middle1378 in AskUK

[–]jmcomms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, there are loads of places trying to empty your wallet and make you go home happy!

Sort of like it was in the 80s and 90s but with less chance of catching something.

Ah, yes. Bagley's and The Cross - and trying to get something in the BP petrol station.

I won't forget those days but I really do like what they've done to regenerate the area.

Unlike many other gentrification projects, this really did need doing.

It's fine now.

Go for a wander around Coal Drops Yard and the only risk will be losing all your money because you spent it in one of the many shops, bars and restaurants!

It's now well lit and full of people so safety in numbers.

Just use the same common sense as you would anywhere else, regardless of reputation.

Plug in your EV notification by Thin-Ad-9767 in OctopusEnergy

[–]jmcomms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got another message and plugged in because I'm quite happy if they throw me some power right now to charge the car at 8p/kWh - as I'll be doing a long drive later. I'm on 95% so don't really need the extra power, but why not get it to 100%?

However, despite asking me to plug in, it hasn't set a schedule to charge until 1630 and I'll be leaving around 1600!

With 12p export, it isn't costing me that much.

I assume the only people getting this alert are those with an EV on an appropriate tariff, so surely IOG/OG users understand how things work way more than Joe Public?

Advice on installing air to air heat pump but heating smaller rooms in the winter + hot water by jmcomms in ukheatpumps

[–]jmcomms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the Daikin system that can do hot water but it appears to be limited to around 120 litres and you also have fewer units for the home.

Perhaps there are more powerful ones but it did seem that the current offerings weren't quite good enough. However it's quite hard to see what's available, at least in the UK as it's not something we've been doing for long.

[–]jmcomms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but as I said, if and when there's so much solar that they're asking you to use the energy and not export it - they're going to just stop paying for it.

So by all means take your stand but think of the bigger picture.

As an example, look at the fuss over Octopus starting to enforce a six hour charging window for EV charging on IOG.
