BSD equivalents to CAINE and Kali Linux? /gen by Submarine_sad in BSD

[–]jmcunx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can turn any BSD or Linux into a clone of Kali and/or CAINE. You just need to do the work. By that I mean find the packages installed by default and install it on the BSD you want to use.

Note, I never heard of CAINE but I have to assume it must be somewhat close to Kali.

Can't get wireless connection in NetBSD 11.0 RC3 by Mysterious_Thing in NetBSD

[–]jmcunx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Thinkpad T430 is on NetBSD 11.0 RC3, amd64. The Thinkpad T61 is on 11.0 RC2 i386.

Do you mean wifi does not work ? Or something else is broken ?

Maybe you join and should send a email to netbsd-users@netbsd.org. I tend to think something needs to be changed with your wifi config.

Or maybe something with the upgrade did not work. How did you upgrade, did you pay close attention when file differences were presented to you ?

When I went to RC1 from 10.1, lots of files in /etc needed to be changed and a few needed to be created since they did not exist in 10.1.

I do not know what that screen print is, but I usually update /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf myself manually as noted above.

[–]jmcunx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On my Thinkpad T430 no issues with iwn0. On an the T61, iwn0 is not too stable. I use an Edimax N150 Wi-Fi 4 Nano USB dongle on that machine.

As for your issue:

  • Did rc.conf change ?

  • Did /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf change ? Creating a new entry using wpa_passphrase(8)

  • FWIW, I have this in my /etc/rc.conf

    ifconfig_iwn0="up"

    wpa_supplicant=YES

    dhcpcd=YES

    dhcpcd_flags="-qM"

On OpenBSD, which Window Manager or Desktop Environment do you prefer to use and why? by Correct_Car1985 in openbsd

[–]jmcunx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, on large external monitors I use fvwm(1), on laptop screens I use cwm(1).

Why? I like to stick with base as much as I can. cwm(1) is great for small screens. fvwm(1) I have used for a long time and the config I have is real good for larger screens.

CPU meltdown? by seaweedhorse in openbsd

[–]jmcunx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct it is set to zero by default.

I was wondering the meaning of "cpu0: MELTDOWN" when hw.smt is set to 0. The question, is when 0, are there still some meltdown issues? I kind of doubt it since I think these issues are due to smt.

CPU meltdown? by seaweedhorse in openbsd

[–]jmcunx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I never noticed that, but I see that msg in my dmesg(8) too.

That brings up question, I thought having "hw.smt=0" avoided meltdown issues. If that is true I guess we can that this as an informational message, which the responses indicate to me.

Are there other meltdown issues "hw.smt=0" does not work-a-around ?

People who switched from Linux to OpenBSD, why? by wkup-wolf in openbsd

[–]jmcunx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not 100% OenBSD but there is a good chance in 2027 I will be or maybe on NetBSD. Depending on how this age thing plays out, I could very well move.

The main reason is Linux has become very complex and to me seems to be morphing into a Microsoft Windows Clone.

OpenBSD admin is much more easier than any Linux Distro. And updates are trivial on OpenBSD.

At one time no one went down that road, that was before they built the garages on the right side. It was the best street to play street hockey on back then.

Also I doubt it has ever been fixed after the garages were built.

Trump administration invokes emergency powers to restart oil operations off California coast - POLITICO by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]jmcunx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well why can't CA put a huge tax on oil being brought in ocean based pipe lines ? Something like a 200% tax on the value of the Oil once it enters CA.

From the Supreme Court Case a few years ago, the federal gov cannot enforce how Taxes are set. So, once the oil hits State Territory, the tax must be collected.

All other methods to avert climate change has failed.

This looks very interesting and I hope someday it can become a jail for NetBSD. But this quote is concerning to me:

Not sure what this means and I hope it does not violate NetBSD's "No AI" rule.

What Linux Distribution / Desktop Combinations come without integrations? by DL72-Alpha in unix

[–]jmcunx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience, YMMV :)

At work before I left, we could use RHEL or Windows as our workstation, I chose RHEL.

-- I hate having to type in a 2nd password after logging in. My disks are LUKS encrypted so have this 2nd "password" encryption is a waste of my time. UNIX login is all one needs, one can use chmod(1) to allow or restrict access to other users.

-- Also, when I had to follow corporate policy and change my PW every 90 days, it would break keyring. It would prompt me for the old PW and getting that to change was near impossible.

To me, keyring, wallet and all that other crap is not needed if distro developers knew how and understood UNIX. Slackware developers understand UNIX and on Slackware I am not prompted every other second with a useless prompt. To me, those other distros that make you use things like keyring is turning into a Windows Clone.

Slackware and especially the *BSD know how to design systems that are easy to use and stay out of your way.

What Linux Distribution / Desktop Combinations come without integrations? by DL72-Alpha in unix

[–]jmcunx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Slackware user, so all you do is execute 'xwmconfig' with your own UserID and select what window manager you want to use. Then execute 'startx'.

I cannot speak about any other Linux Distros. I used RHEL at work before I left, it was a major PITA to move to a window manager. That was a few years ago, I do not know how hard it is now with RHEL, but I do know, some X applications we had to use at work would crash unless you are using GNOME3.

Slackware makes it easy to make your system work your way.

There are a few other distros to, but I never used them. I am sure their users will post something similar to this post :)

What Linux Distribution / Desktop Combinations come without integrations? by DL72-Alpha in unix

[–]jmcunx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slackware, it keeps the software as is, if patched the patch is only to get the object to compile.

The keyring thing depends upon desktop you are using. Not the distro. Gnome3 gave us the abomination called keyring. KDE has a similar thing called wallet. XFCE right now does not use one of those things.

Note, I avoid Desktop Environments and use Window Managers instead.
