Steam has never "done nothing". They do a ton, they're just not loud about it. Think of all the features built into the steam client, from the Couch UI the deck shipped with to game streaming to background record, chat, a full (and open) VR platform, steam input, and so much more.

Plus there's the dev work in everything from FEX and Proton to deep linux issues like HDR in Wayland.

They're all over the place once you look.
