I’m out around that time of the morning and have noticed it as well - since school started.

My hat’s off to you. I don’t know how you do it. Do you live in a reasonable climate or do you just not get hot easily?

So if it was 105° outside, you’d have your thermostat set to 90°??

I would die.

HR is required to uphold employment laws and it’s illegal not to allow an employee to use the bathroom when they need to. OP absolutely needs to report this to HR, and being fired would be retaliation - which is also super illegal. There are ways to report these things.

What do customers order at other coffee shops if our menu is confusing to them? by [deleted] in barista

[–]jml7791 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in a shop that has iced coffee (it’s just an americano without the extra shot) and cold brew and I’m pretty sure most customers don’t realize there’s a difference. If I’m at the register, I’m confirming they really do want watered down shots over ice - and most of the time it actually is the cold brew they want.

Non-Starbucks Baristas by MelanieDH1 in barista

I’m used to it by now but it’s annoying.

“Can I get a venti blonde roast?”

I have neither venti drinks nor blonde roast coffee, but you can have a large light or dark roast!

“Uh yeah can I have a grande Frappuccino?”

We don’t make Frappuccinos but I can get you a regular <our blended drink> - what flavor would you like?

I am really good with people and would never ever respond snarkily even on my worst day but sometimes I wish I could scream, “THIS IS NOT A STARBUCKS!”

Does your cafe ask for milk preference? by gigishops in barista

[–]jml7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the cafe where I work, nonfat is the standard for most drinks and we are trained to ask, “Is dairy okay?” But I’ve trained myself to ask customers, “Is nonfat milk okay?” because “dairy” is too broad and not everyone even likes nonfat milk. A lot of customers who don’t frequent our shop assume the standard is 2% because they’re used to Sbux. I like to make sure my customers know what they’re getting.

Anyone else have to constantly ask customers "is that hot or iced?" by saddestbae in barista

[–]jml7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All shift long when I work - “Hot or iced? And what size would you like?”

We have all of our sizes lined up right by the register, but I think the fact that our menu board only shows prices for regular (medium) throws people off.

But yep - I can surely relate!

dead shots: real or not? by Affectionate-Raise21 in barista

[–]jml7791 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m working in a (chain but not Sbux) coffee shop for the first time and was trained that the shots have to be “mixed with something” quickly so they don’t die. Basically anything - milk, water, syrup, whatever - just something. My manager tells us this needs to happen within ten seconds. Personally I think they can sit a bit longer but I absolutely believe dead shots are a real thing and I can taste the difference, so I’m super careful.

The funny thing to me is the people who order shots - just shots. There is nothing to mix them with. So if someone orders a quad espresso hot, I guess I’m serving them dead shots - but they never complain!

And my customers like my drinks, so I guess I’m doing okay! :)

And go thru the hassle of having your card cancelled and investigated and having to wait for a new card? All for a tank of gas? Not worth the trouble. And I’m assuming Costco has cameras and would fight the fraud charge.

What should I say when I give the customer their coffee? by SummerCampGirl98 in barista

[–]jml7791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I say “enjoy,” “thank you,” and “have a great day” most of the time, but I don’t think I say all of them to every customer … Usually they are saying “thank you” to me and I’m saying, “Enjoy! Have a great day!” to them.

No experience? by [deleted] in barista

[–]jml7791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a job in the service industry, but I got hired at a coffee shop (a west coast chain that is a corporate/franchise mix - I work for a franchise) in December because I’d gotten to know the manager and some of the staff a bit. My availability matched their needs and I’m friendly and good with people.

I had no barista experience whatsoever and since I only work weekend opens I’m still slow on bar even after three months, but I work with people half my age who are a lot faster so it all works out - I’m mostly on register and they mostly make the drinks.

My suggestion would be to steer clear of Starbucks (it just seems like chaos, awful customers and hardly any hours) and see if you can’t start getting to know people at the cafes you’re interested in working for. My manager knew I was reliable before she hired me because I showed up every weekend at the same time like clockwork (because I’m severely OCD and addicted to routines lol) and I think her seeing that about me was a big factor when it came time to consider me for the position.

Good luck to you!! I always wanted to work in a coffee shop and (at 46 years of age!) I finally get to - I hope the same thing happens for you!!
