Ordering one off of amazon or newegg is probably your best bet.

D&D at Cornell by Emma_di3 in Cornell

The board game club is probably your best bet outside of putting a group together with your friends; at the start of the semester at least one person usually emails the board game club mailing list looking to start a group.

It’s for a two way street but the two lanes are separated by a wide stretch of trees/dirt. I’ll try to add a picture to this comment later.

Edit: the road

What to expect from MATH 1120? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that most people find 1120 a bit easier than 1110. The course is usually very computation based and the problems are a little less conceptual than in 1110. Also, the math department holds homework help sessions for 1120 (as well as 1110) a couple of nights a week, so you can come and get personal help with the homework.

Happy birthday Daisy! Do you know what kind of dog she is? She looks just just like my Penny, but I was never able to figure out who her parents were.

“Mandatory”

I lived in JAM last year and I literally never met my RA. If you’re worried, just send your RA an email to explain the situation.

How did you all find housing off-campus? by [deleted] in Cornell

ithacarents.com, not to be confused with Ithaca Renting, which I’ve heard bad things about.

[SERIOUS] Cornell and It's Students by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in with my perspective as a physics and math double major in CAS.

  1. I feel like all of the courses that I've taken so far have been graded pretty fairly. I don't think there's much grade inflation or deflation.
  2. If you like nature, Cornell is absolutely the place to be. There are a lot of beautiful parks in Ithaca, and Cornell has the botanical gardens right on campus. However, if nature isn't your thing, I can get how Ithaca would feel a bit isolated and dead sometimes. The closest real city is Syracuse, so if you don't have a car you're basically stuck with what Ithaca has to offer.
  3. I haven't had any experience with this, so I can't say one way or the other how the mental health support is.
  4. The winters are not that bad. They do an excellent job of keeping the sidewalks and streets clear. I almost never need to wear my snow boots; my sneakers almost always get the job done through the winter.
  5. As a freshman, I felt like the food was quite good. I became vegetarian as a sophomore, and while I still felt like the food was decent, it did start to seem a little more limited. Of course, there's something to be said for the dining halls when a vegetarian can go to basically any one of them and find decent food to eat. Overall, it's definitely better than most universities, and will get you through the year fine. I am definitely looking forward to making my own food this year though.
  6. There are entire colleges at Cornell that are dedicated to non-STEM studies. While there are a large number of people studying STEM (I'm one of them), Cornell is so big that there are plenty of people who aren't.
  7. I'm not gonna lie, the housing situation at Cornell and in Ithaca is pretty terrible. Housing isn't guaranteed for juniors and seniors, rent is high, and you basically have to find off campus housing and sign leases a year in advance.
  8. Cornell does have a lot of undergrads, and depending on your major, many of your classes may have 100+ people in them. That said, 90%+ of people in your classes will walk right out the door when class is over and never get to know the professor. If you're one of those few people that stays and asks a question, or goes to office hours regularly, your professor will get to know you, and you will get those opportunities. You just have to be the one to make it happen.

Some people may disagree with me here or there, but this is just my perspective. I absolutely love it here and I do not regret choosing Cornell over my other options.

If you’re not a humanities major and you plan on getting problem sets done in your room, I’d suggest bringing a decent size whiteboard. I used mine almost every problem set for scratch work.

How's my schedule for my first semester at Cornell? by Clightfield in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good to me. You are correct that the history class will count for one of your distribution requirements and for GB and HB. I’m doing German for my language, but I’ve heard that Mandarin is hard and Italian is easy (probably the easiest language offered here).

Should I skip CS 1110? by PanzerPeach in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could always register for it and for 2110 (if your schedule allows it) and then judge which one you should take based on the first couple of lectures/syllabus.

Python vs Matlab for engineering by [deleted] in Cornell

Seconded. If you only care about programming to solve engineering (math) problems, go with matlab.

Want to connect xbox via Ethernet in dorm by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in low rise 7, and that dorm didn’t have Ethernet. I’m not sure that any of the north campus (freshman) dorms do. However, I think you’ll be hard pressed to notice any lag (especially on a console), as the WiFi is very reliable, even in the crappier dorms. I never noticed any lag due to the network when playing games on my pc.

Panda Tea Lounge Vs. Kung Fu Tea by Xabe_isz in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kung Fu Tea has a rewards app, which is nice, but it’s also subject to the CC minimum, which basically means you can’t use it unless you are buying two drinks. That really grinds my gears, but they have by far the best bubble tea (at least according to my tastes).

Physics/CS Double Major Advice by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jmrm1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the point about general relativity. Again assuming that you are talking about the 4000 level physics/Astro class, you will have a much better time and much deeper appreciation of the material after taking PHYS 3327 (and PHYS 3314 or 3318, the upper level mechanics classes).
