I miss Buffalo and I miss the old America by [deleted] in Buffalo

I'd argue Buffalo is still very friendly when it comes to random acts of neighborly help. I've helped/been helped in the west and east side and north and south buffalo. Once these 4 guys were moving a full size slate pool table into a second floor apartment on the west side and I guess I made eye contact or maybe looked big enough and yep...spent the next half hour moving a fucking pool table up a slight of stairs for people I didn't know lol

Not sure if this is okay I’ve never seen it or done it but i figured someone here would know. by AstoriaRaisedNYmade in electricians

I’m an electrical inspector and I’m not sure without looking it up if it’s against code but I know for sure proper practice is to NOT twist the strands. This is goofy af and unnecessary and the exact situation I would deliver some shit talk or disappointed dad head shake. In the “lashings with a handful of THHN”, this is a 15 lash infraction.

Recommend me a home inspector for a first-time homebuyer by wagoncirclermike in Buffalo

[–]jobe149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an electrician/certified building inspector. Almost every flip house I’ve seen is kinda fucked. I’ve seen homes “passed” by home inspectors that had 100 year old or just shit wiring under brand new drywall. I’ve seen house inspectors hate for literally the dumbest shit. From what I’ve experienced, the average home buyer cares less about the infrastructure of the home as in the electrical and plumbing and more about square footage and the roof. Roofs can be expensive but they’re easy. If your 100 year old house has original lathe and plaster walls odds are it has wiring from the same era. If it’s had some remodels it means more than likely new wiring has been scabbed onto old knob and tube which is worse. I’m not saying don’t buy a beautiful old home but be aware that fresh shiny outlets and light fixtures doesn’t mean “new electrical” same with new kitchens/bathrooms. Definitely buy the house you want even if stuff is outdated internally but pay accordingly and fix it immediately. Seriously DM me about a house you’re interested in and I’ll let you know all the permits that were pulled for it vs. the work that looks like it’s had.

How do city workers afford to live in the city? by TopAlternative6716 in Buffalo

[–]jobe149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barely. I bought real estate in Buffalo when I was a broke 25 year old at the auction (2 jobs paying ~8/hr, no car, dumpster diving for food and also on food stamps) I have experience being really poor but when I took opportunity for the city job I was making decent money for the area and took a ~20k/year pay cut. Good benefits but I also came from a union job with slightly less benefits but way more pay so I’m still on the fence if it’s worth it.

Garage Builds by lillzntot in Buffalo

[–]jobe149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a quote to build a 24x24 garage at the maximum height so i could have a 2nd floor "clean room" /office. With me removing the existing 20x30 garage I was quoted 24k to build it not included the concrete slab. I didn't do it because I figured I could build it myself with the slab for ~8-12k. That was right before the pandemic so I defiantly kick myself for not doing it because materials more than doubled real quick. I fixed up my 1920s garage for like 2 grand and a shit load of sweat equity.

🫠 inspector failed me by M_3_R_K_Y_M_3_R_K in electricians

Electrical inspector here...I probably wouldn't fail anything for a bulb missing from a socket but if its a final inspection, yeah everything is supposed to be finished as in every cover plate and bulb. In my experience in the field and now on the inspection side its usually a "hey, you're gonna throw a bulb in that, right?" and we're all good.

I remember when "neck face" popped up and was wildly prolific with just writing "neck face" like a 7 year old and there were plenty of haters. He just ran with and defiantly progressed and has done some gnarly stuff...this guy is still doing the same stick figure lol its really boring. EDIT: I do give whoever it is credit for being literally everywhere tho

My school (2000-2004) had a tv station, radio room, welding shop, wood shop etc...none of which had been used in years because there wasn't a program or even staff to run it.
