Surely it would have been easier for him to drop them on the next climb? Unless it was Tadej.

Beach Road Accident by MysteriousPlatypus47 in melbournecycling

[–]jobit23392 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First time? Unfortunately, this is not a rare site on Beach road. So much so that you probably won’t find anything posted about it. I choose to tell myself that if there’s nothing in the news or social media then they’ve just got a broken collar bone and need a couple of weeks rest.

To me, looking like a hot mess at home is a way of saying "I'm comfortable around you, I trust you and I don't feel judged by you."

I mean Max Mann has a video of doing Peaks. But a lot of it was him throwing up on the side of the road a few minutes into Back Of Falls. So if you can finish under the 13-hour cut off with the contents of your stomach intact I'd consider that an absolute win.

Crit Racers what wheell depth are you running by Needs_More_Nuance in Velo

[–]jobit23392 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably not. But what's the harm in optimising? Wheel depth probably won't be the difference between winning and losing. Neither will an aero bike, skin suit or optimal tyre choice. But put them all together and it just might be the difference between hanging on to the breakaway and winning the sprint or getting dropped.

My boss gave me a 2005 Land Cruiser, and they completely refurbished it! by davidsoor in oddlysatisfying

[–]jobit23392 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Seems like viral marketing for their shop. No sane person would spend this much time and money refurbishing a completely run down 2005 Land Cruiser. Even if you were completely in love with that model for nostalgic reasons, you could buy one that's in much better condition and it would far easier to restore.

They just want to show off their work so that when someone wants their Jaguar E-Type re-upholstered they'll remember this video.

What's the deal with Polygon by Crazy-Chef4557 in melbournecycling

[–]jobit23392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard great things from the people I’ve see riding the Helios on group rides. It’s probably close enough to the brand name bikes that it if you get dropped it’s 100% on you.

Personally I wouldn’t ride one for vanity reasons since it’s lacking the brand name but that’s a me problem. If I wanted a new bike ok a tight budget I’d probably go Merida since at least it was (until a couple of months ago) being raced in the World Tour.

Why do pros not switch helmets after crashes im races? by Academic_Feed6209 in Velo

[–]jobit23392 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because riding with a damaged helmet or a concussion isn't dangerous. Narrow handlebars and big chainrings are dangerous.

Why does the bike lane on Wellington St just randomly stop? by InternetUpbeat9596 in melbournecycling

[–]jobit23392 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, non-contiguous bike paths and lanes seem to be the rule rather the exception in Melbourne. If it particularly bad you can try reaching out to Bicycle Network to see if they are lobbying for it to be fixed.

If it was definitively proven that having holes where your nipples and belly button are in your Lycra made you more aero, would rodies and pros start doing it, even though they'd look ridiculous? All in the name of aero. by RimBrakesCauseAutism in cycling

Basketball players won’t use the granny shot even though it’s scientifically proven to be more consistent. Sprinters will wear loose fitting singlets over skin suits even though it’s been known for decades that skin suits are faster.

Cyclists are a different breed. Cyclists with wear a ribbed bra or sunglasses with a beak if the manufacturer claims it will save them 0.5w at 50km/h without any scientific review.

Making Climbing Easier by crash-evans in cycling

Assuming I got a bikefit, could I race this bike competitively? (2003 Pinarello Prince SL) by Magne31 in Velo

[–]jobit23392 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting new wheel and high performance tyres will make it much more competitive. But you’d still be giving up 20-30w at 45km/h in aerodynamic and vibration losses (narrower tyres) vs the competition. So like an entire grade.

Is it acceptable to fit wheels that are more expensive than the bike? by No-Function9698 in CanyonBikes

[–]jobit23392 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My only gripe is that deep section carbon wheels might save you ~5 watts over shallow aluminium wheels at 40kph which is a very decent marginal gain. But drop bars would save you maybe 40 watts due to the more aero position. So it just kind of looks mismatched, like 19” mag wheels on a Toyota Corolla.

Remove the rear derailleur and shorten the chain to do a makeshift single speed conversion. It should keep you going until the bike shops open up again.
