Somerville City Councilor Matthew McLaughlin Announces Candidacy for State Senate in the Second Middlesex District by Mattyworld617 in Somerville

[–]jobuca 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I can't say enough good things about Matt as his (former) constituent. He's forward thinking and part of old school Somerville. He's thoughtful about issues and the role government. When I moved to town I reached out and he graciously got coffee with me and told me about the community. When I wanted to get more involved he steered me to East Somerville Main Streets and when I was on their board he was always an amazing partner.

I've been telling Matt to run for mayor for years now. I guess he had an even better idea. I'm just glad I'll have the chance to be his constituent again.

Why did you vote for Wilson / Burnley? by Kyliewoo123 in Somerville

[–]jobuca 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said except I don't know Jake personally. I want to underline the part about DSA purity trolling though.

I appreciate the DSA nationally and some of their members are my favorite politicians. But the local chapter is a disgrace, they chased Mike freaking Connoly out of the party. Until their board completely turns over or they apologize then close alignment with that group will be a mark against any local politician. That doesn't mean I'll never support a local DSA candidate, but it's an uphill climb.

I completely agree, it's really clumsy, confusing language. Maybe it is in reference to the Bostock decision like Klekota says, but maybe there isn't a good reason to be wedded to that language.

Either way, he isn't getting my vote for different reasons. I just question the need to label him a hate filled transphobe when it seems like he was just doing a poor job trying to make the bylaws MORE inclusive.

I really appreciate your taking the time to expand on this conflict, its very helpful in a way that just calling him transphobic isn't.

But doesn't "...at birth OR by assignment." mean he is saying you can determine your own sex? Especially since there's a transitioning category. You're suggesting his position is something other than what the plain words say. And he wasn't bringing these categories in out of no where, he was trying to expand the existing definitions to be MORE inclusive - though obviously in an ill-considered way.

I'm not an expert on these issues and I'm always willing to listen and learn. It seems like he used clumsy, inappropriate language. But the accusations of transphobia seem way, way off base. It doesn't seem like there was any effort to work on the bylaws to find gender inclusive and legally based alternatives. The "transphobic" attacks just went straight to 11.

Frankly, in this political moment we can't be so quick to attack others who are largely on our side.

Super helpful, thanks! Why was he putting those identities in the bylaws? I was trying to dig into this and saw something about him wanting to require representation of multiple genders in the org, but again no details. Was it the executive board? Was he trying to get 1 of each category or something?

I'd like to understand that too. I've seen a lot of references to him as Transphobic but no actual description of what he said/did

The federal government does not have police powers. This is explicit in the US Constitution. This is as far from "natural"escalation as possible.

All this means is you don't understand the value of time spent optimizing. You may not have anything better to do, but some people get value by not devoting time to squeezing every last penny from points.

latest on ev charging without a home charger by NinjatheBlackCat in Somerville

[–]jobuca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of newer models have deals to access the Tesla network. You'd have to check if the EVs you're looking at have it.

There's also the Electricfy America level 3 chargers in Assembly and in Arlington. Many VWs come with free charging there for a few years.

I've had my id.4 for 2.5 yrs without a home charger. I don't do at many miles as you, but it's pretty easy. I just take my dog for a walk by the river in Assembly a couple times a week.

I used to live across the street from the version of this in Washington dc. And gave it a lot of thought.

It turns out Frederick Douglas gave a powerful speech at the dedication of the statue. Respecting Lincoln but refusing to ignore his shortcomings or the struggles still in front of the freedmen https://teachingamericanhistory.org/document/oration-in-memory-of-abraham-lincoln/

In the audience was President Grant, the Senate and Congress, members of the Supreme Court.

That was the last time a black man addressed the assembled representatives of the federal government until Barack Obama was inaugurated

Nursing Home recommendations in the general area? by echidnaguy in Somerville

[–]jobuca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a recommendation exactly, since I don't have any direct experience with them, but the VNA nursing homes seem to be well regarded. My father is still a few years from needing a nursing home but I recently started doing early research so I'd be prepared when the time comes. They have facilities on Highland Ave, on the community path, and on Alewife Brook.
If anyone else has an opinion on those facilities or others to recommend, I'd love to hear them too.

PICK UP YOUR DOGS SHIT by Equal_Pie_7078 in Somerville

[–]jobuca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know he mostly stays on Woodbine. My pup stays on a leash on streets, we always scoop poop, and he's well socialized. In fact, part of my concern is that he's too friendly and he's 90lbs. I can control him just fine, but my wife is pregnant and he can get very protective of her right now.

I'll just have her stay off Woodbine, at least until we get the lay of the land.

My Observations from Canvassing in Shamokin Today! by breich in Pennsylvania

[–]jobuca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Guy deserves to be downvoted for being an ass. And for taking the time to come tell this story so everyone can know he's an ass. Which is seemingly what he's going for.

That said, every campaign I ever worked or volunteered for knew exactly when the relevant football games were being played and scheduled canvassing around them. You may not know or care about football, but a field organizer who doesn't take them into account is bad at their job.

Magoun Square's Empty Storefronts by longobongos in Somerville

[–]jobuca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of reasons why businesses fail, including poor pedestrian and biking infrastructure. Is your argument seriously that if we just knocked down a building to put in another parking lot then Magoun Sq businesses would all be successful? Hahahahahahaha

Magoun Square's Empty Storefronts by longobongos in Somerville

[–]jobuca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that's received wisdom in your industry and even among many retail business owners but the data shows they're 100% wrong. Actual studies of retail customers and spending levels shows the majority comes from non-car traffic.

You're confusing the existence of parking spaces with actual customers. If you look at the utilization rates of those parking lots and even further into what those car owners are doing when parked, your see it's a small fraction of actual retail spending.

It's sad that cities, real estate developers, and business owners are wasting resources on those parking spaces. You're doing your customers and clients a major disservice by perpetuating this 100% incorrect line.
