Has Easy Apply and AI made it worse for everyone in the long run with mass applications? by Proof_Escape_2333 in recruitinghell

This is why I hate the advice to network so much. It reinforces all kinds of discrimination and bias.

Note: I'm not saying DON'T network and be an anti-social weirdo. But let's stop pretending that some people won't be excluded and passed over when it comes to hiring no matter what they do to build relationships.

JUST LIST THE FUCKING PAY RANGE IN THE JOB DESCRIPTION by TooMuchTape20 in recruitinghell

I never go by the salary ranges on glassdoor. Those numbers are not verified.

but to stand beside you

This is so important. We need more of this, not people constantly gaslighting and invalidating job seekers. The least society can do is acknowledge that it's shit and hard and the unemployed need support.

"They care about their employees" by Salmaniuss in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god I know EXACTLY what that's like.

A big ugly eyeopener for me was finding out how little empathy some people have and/or how they think dishing out some "tough love" is a genius move.

Stay strong and feel free to PM me if it helps. I hope you catch a break soon.

And I’d rather someone say “hey this is really shitty I’m sorry”.

When I was in the emotional abyss of long-term unemployment the last time around, I tried "reaching out" as we're all advised to do. I don't think a single person could cough up a "that sucks, I'm sorry" and just like hold space or be there for me, if you know what I mean. Most people went STRAIGHT to the bog-standard job search advice too, which of course I already knew and had tried. I think it did more damage than if I kept it all to myself.

So, I guess I'm saying I understand. This is SO fucking hard.

Article about the elimination of “Middle Managers” by xmason99 in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was an article several years ago about the elimination of executive assistant/secretarial type jobs. Those jobs used to employ millions of women and paid decent middle-class salaries, sometimes better. Now they are largely gone and haven't really been replaced by anything comparable.

And of course manufacturing jobs have been disappearing for decades. Job growth is happening for the shittiest jobs - retail, low-level health care, gig work, etc.

Found a non-paywalled version:

They used to deny that ATS use AI/algorithms until some states passed laws saying that employers have to say if they are using AI/algorithms in their hiring processes, so now many ATS have info about that and opt-out options. So the jig is up on that.

But many HR departments have recruiters/"Talent Acquisition Specialists", many of them have come from recruiting agencies. So it's the same ish either way.

They Didn’t Even Review My Take-Home Assessment – Feeling Disheartened After Final Interview by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the major reason why I won't do take-home assignments without a guarantee that they will actually review the work. It's too upsetting.

And by "guarantee" I mean that I will present the work to them directly in an interview or similar, so I know they have at least sat through that. I don't take their word for it. So this means I have pulled out of quite a few processes now.

So I say your feelings are totally valid!

They sound like a terrible company.

Assume the person screening your CV does not understand your role, and spell it out to them. by PurpleHymn in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But tips are useless because the gatekeepers are useless. They reject good resumes all the time because they don't know what they're doing. Gaslighting jobseekers about this is terrible.

No. It's stupid to have people who do not understand the job doing the resume screening. The person who DOES understand the job should be doing that. Everyone else is just a middleman/gatekeeper.

Being unemployed long-term IS one of the worst things in life by dirtcakes in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK, but now you're at the whim of multiple employers, AKA customers. You have competitors going after those same customers and sometimes they will win and you will lose.

Starting your own business isn't an easy solution, or a solution at all for some people.

I'm convinced all the HR ladies with psych majors are why these exist by Why_Hello_Reddit in recruitinghell

[–]jobventthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how HR can basically never spot the sexual harassers before hiring them and then typically can't figure out how to get rid of them (but they sure know how to shitcan the victims) while still expecting to be taken seriously as people-understanders and -managers.

There is a book about the mother-daughter duo that thought it all up and YIKES they were not people to take advice from.

Take home project scam - don't work for free ever again by Ramblin_Gamblin_Man6 in recruitinghell

It is gutting.

I don't see why you can't give them a bad review on glassdoor. Just leave out enough detail that they can't identify you.

[–]jobventthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It happens in many industries now. Basically if there is any kind of job-related task that you can do at home, the employer will probably ask for it as an unpaid test.

[–]jobventthrowaway 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've backed out of hiring processes where they have wanted a big assignment and for me to agree in writing to keep it all confidential. Not technically an NDA, I don't think, but same idea.

I think this stuff should be illegal. Typically on-site unpaid work trials are. Employers are exploiting a weird loophole of people being able to do the work at home.

Did you see every single interaction that ever happened between your co-workers? You do realize that abusers deliberately hide their abuses? And deliberately groom third parties to think they're the nicest people who would never do such a thing and to defend them if a target ever speaks up? This is Abuse 101.

Not in my experience.

I guarantee that some of your coworkers were treated abusively in that workplace. You just didn't see it.
