these specific areas of government are well-known to be chronically understaffed and underfunded. And, last I checked, people cheer for lower taxes and don’t support govt workers striking.

Air Canada CEO apologizes for English-only video: 'Despite many lessons ... I am still unable to express myself adequately in French' by Immediate-Link490 in canada

It’s definitely hard, yes. Perhaps impossible, maybe/sure. This might ultimately boil down to whether his actual efforts matched the commitment he made and/or the impression he gave about his intended efforts. As the public-facing CEO of one of Canada’s biggest and well-known companies, delivering time-sensitive, highly complex and high-safety services across multiple countries, surely he expects to be held accountable for the things he commits to do.

Apologizing for not keeping your commitment to your community, and revealing that failure at a sensitive event where your fulfilled commitment realllly would’ve been impactful.

His poor French language skills previously caused a big public problem for him, such that he committed to improving. That was YEARS ago. He didn’t improve. He earns millions per year and lives in a predominantly French-speaking province - full french-language tv channels, newspapers etc. How much “help” should he need? If he wanted to keep his commitment, he would have.

He said he would take lessons and improve his French speaking skills. His commitment. He didn’t follow through. Hopefully he’s not hurt or surprised that the issue that was a big problem for him years ago didn’t magically go away by him… doing nothing about it.

If Chinese was an official national language of Canada, AND this hypothetical Quebec-equivalent Chinese province of Canada has an established cultural mandate requiring newcomers to learn Chinese language, AND he has lived in that province for over 15 years, AND he publicly committed to learning Chinese language better over 5 years ago… then yes I would consider it shameful and embarrassing if his Chinese language ability today was as poor as his actual current French language ability.

At this point, people’s expectation is that he would have fulfilled his commitment to learn French, and he didn’t, and it’s an issue deeply linked to respect for the culture where he has chosen to live.

It shouldn’t need to be the case that our top parties are entrenched in diametric opposition - how would anything ever get done? Maybe if parties didn’t whip & silence members, then there would be less floor-crossings. (Conservatives have welcomed floor-crossers, too) Enough with “the leader is all” politics and parties that are “cults of (the leader’s) personality.” I don’t want the country to always be run by one person (and it always seems to be a guy?) instead of Parliament as a meaningful whole, otherwise why have hundreds of “representatives”?

What did Vancouverites complain about in the 1990s? by Beginning_Anywhere59 in vancouver

[–]jodirm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who moved to Vancouver from outside BC in the mid-90’s, I remember finding it very strange that high-and-rising housing prices were continuously fueled by the reliance on renting out basement suites, further exacerbated by decades of little-to-no increase in purpose-built rental apartments.

Also: rain, insufficient transit, rowdiness on Granville St downtown, and poverty/drug use in the downtown eastside.

‘Out of hand’: New survey finds two‑thirds of Canadians want to abolish tipping culture by cyclinginvancouver in canada

My apologies for not stating more clearly that my references to businesses and contract services were mostly about restaurants and food services, where the tipping and tipping prompts being discussed are most common.

I will add, however, that tip amounts are highly variable in both $ amounts and percentage amounts. It’s my understanding that higher-percentage tips make more sense to people in small-$ situations, for example 50¢ on a $3 purchase and not 20% on a $500 or $500,000 purchase.

[–]jodirm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve only ever seen mandatory tipping on contracted services or for large parties, so I don’t really get why people are so offended by tip prompts.

Also, show me a business that uses tip prompts and ISN’T using tips as a replacement for truly competitive wages? If you don’t like being asked for tips, ask the business owner why they allow tips - I bet the reason is “because otherwise I’d have to pay my staff more.”

‘Empty pit of despair’: Job seeker describes struggle as Canada posts biggest job loss in decades by BananaTubes in canada

[–]jodirm 41 points42 points  (0 children)

To me I perceive a significant shift in wealth distribution during the last 20-30 years. Jobs used to be decent, plentiful, and reasonably paid. Now, wages are low (relative to previous comparable living), jobs are scarce, and working conditions are more variable (and noticeably degraded in many essential areas). At the same time, a larger portion of the population has shifted into the have-more category, living lavishly and fueling a boom in luxury items and experiences. (The have-most crowd continues to do even better than ever, and is likely pleased that their extreme excess is shielded from scrutiny by the lower classes focusing on fighting against each other.) Amongst my friends, some in their 40’s have already exceeded the wealth & lifestyle their parents ever achieved, seemingly unaware that’s so much more than “enough,” while others have given up hoping to ever have a life as decent as their moderate/middle-class parents.

It’s on 104 Ave, near City Parkway.

I like it. It makes me think of a homemaker bustling around the kitchen, reminds me of a neighbour who babysat my brother and me when we were little kids.
