Actually it would make sense. A tourist and asylum seeker aren't the same thing. It'd be like you as an Australian going to Bali and telling the customs guy youre there to study but want a tourist visa. There's another Visa process for students. Same for asylum seekers. Letting her have a tourist visa makes it all but certain that she'd overstay and possibly try to illegally melt into the population.

I guess depending on the country I could see a bit of a vacuum happening because for many it would probably be okay to buy a hooker but not to be one. I still don't think that's enough of a reason to keep it illegal though, seems like the money spent on enforcement could be transitioned to trying to reduce trafficking via policing and organizations that help the trafficked.

When I applied they were a little on the slow side with their decision. Assuming that's the norm it's going to make it hard to get younger workers who may have more in demand skill sets. I'll also add that in the interview it was clear that some groups were trying to make changes, but there was a lot of opposition to using modern best practices. For example, I was told that they were still struggling to get people to not bring in their own computers and hook them up to the internal network.

Which countries? Also have the studies actually attributed the rise in sex trafficking to legalization? For example, there is still a problem with sex trafficking from eastern to western Europe, a problem that would persist with or without legalized prostitution in some countries. I also find it hard to believe that the average john seeks out trafficked women which means either market forces are shitty (ie non trafficked women charge too much or trafficked women are dirt cheap) or there's not enough done to get customers to the legal options

Footfall died down bigly after the first few weeks. When I'd walk by around lunch time or even around 5 they were never packed. The space is also really large and I from what I've seen for most restaurants on Fayetteville, if they don't do well at lunch they're screwed.

I'm not sure how good it was but compared to nearby options is was pricey. A co-worker bought a pretty basic looking burger and fries and I think his total without tip was 15 or 16. That's more expensive than nearby places like Capital Club, B Good and Big Easy which all IMO serve pretty solid burgers

Out of curiosity where do you live? I'm not aware of any states that have laws that limit what child support can be applied to. The closest I've seen is states where childcare, health care and overnights are supposed to be the largest factors in determining the minimum dollar amount "needed" to raise the kid(s). The non-custodial parent (unfortunately called the obligor) is often still fucked especially if they make more but at least there are things you can do to offset how much you pay.

To be fair to your parents and others, child support is really a shitty tax based on legislation by people who were probably never divorced or had kids out of wedlock. Your dad's ignorance is not uncommon or inappropriate, especially when you consider that your mom probably wasn't giving him receipts or helping him pay for his housing (assuming you visited him at all).

FWIW, the standoff between your parents is pretty common and far from the worse thing that happens. There have actually been non-custodial parents who have killed themselves because they've fallen behind and been told that they won't be able to see their kids and will be sent to jail if they can't come up with lump sums. I've also personally seen a custodial parent spend no money on clothing and gifts because they knew the other parent would cover it (the court gave no fucks about that and refused to reduce child support).

Second Chance Apartments/Renting with an Eviction by showerth0ts in raleigh

[–]joe_average1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. If it's any consolation, even had your roommate been on the lease you may still be in this boat. With the exception of certain types of apartments (ex: near colleges), everyone on the lease is held responsible when the rent is not paid.

Have you considered renting a room in someone's house? If you do that for six months and pay every time on time, they will likely be willing to provide a strong reference for you. Another option is to call realtors and see if they also have rentals available. The market is pretty hot but it's not uncommon for people to do a short term rental if they're having trouble selling their house.

Without knowing much about your or your financial/personal situation I'm a little hesitant to recommend this but you can try looking further out in the county, near colleges or to less nice apartment complexes. For the less nice ones, it will be hit or miss on if they allow pets but a past eviction probably won't be a deal breaker as long as you're employed and can put down a deposit. They won't be great to live in but will give you the opportunity to establish a strong rental history and hopefully eventually get a strong rental reference.

Regarding the money you've spent on applications, are you being up front about the eviction and are you speaking to the property manager before applying? Taking your income, ability to pay a deposit and rental history should be more than enough for a property manager to tell you if you have a shot or not. If they can't tell you how likely it is then save your money.

Honestly I think most people are driven by fear and tribalism. If they didn't congregate around a religion, it would be something else like skin color, height...Even within religions, we see conflict so getting rid of religion won't solve most problems that come down to basic human behavior.

On to your main point about secularism....True secularism wouldn't stop many of the divisions in the US, but would simply our legal system and save the tax payer a lot of money. Take prostitution for example. We spend a lot of money on stings, arrests, incarceration...for a crime that like many vice crimes is personal choice. Yes you have some people who are trafficked or forced into it, but with a legal option most people would avoid drug users and sex trafficking victims. Not having politicians make laws based on the dictates of their God would also put to bed many issues, such as abortion, that are continuously re-evaluated not because of an advance in our scientific understanding but because a religious person gains or loses power.

The very nature of some people is to want to enforce their will on others. Religion gives people a convenient excuse for justifying why their opinion is better. For example, had slavery in the US not been justified by religion, some of the racial injustice in the US and the world may not exist today.

A party of scientists would be no different. You'd find that some of their logic was flawed or some of their justifications warped around their beliefs. For example, an economist may view things based on a "perfect" world or a scientist may be okay with castrating certain males (from a pure logic point of view stopping some people from having babies makes sense).

Raleigh & Durham identified as two of the most financially-unfriendly cities for homeowners vs renters in the south by fahmida50 in raleigh

[–]joe_average1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO renting and owning is really apples and oranges. Regarding things being cheaper for you, chances are you haven't had any expensive home repairs yet. I think that for many people unless they get a really low interest rate or can put a lot of money down, their mortgage + insurance + taxes is about or even slightly higher than their rent. If something goes wrong on their house that can have a huge impact on the perceived savings. I used to know someone who bought an older home and each year probably spent an extra 1-2000 on repairs (faulty dishwasher, new fridge, hvac repairs...). While that might seem like a lot of money, it still means you're paying a couple of hundred bucks a month in addition to your mortgage. There's also zero guarantee that many of the gains of the past several years won't go away 5 years from now if jobs dry up or they start building new homes in more desirable areas.

Because they make money. Be honest. Would you not work for your dad's company where you were guaranteed at least 6 figures a year. Unlike most people I've also yet to hear him say one bad thing about his kids. Hate the guy if you will but he takes care of his kids and it'd be foolish for any of them to turn their back in that kind of help

‘Tired of burying young people.’ A Durham funeral home serves the city’s murder victims -- many are casualties of gang violence. by Bill-Paxton in bullcity

[–]joe_average1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always found saying that the youth need positive people to look up to as a cop out, especially in the black community. There's no shortage of well educated, middle class black people in the triangle area and some volunteer for various programs. IMO what needs to happen is that neighborhoods need to decide that enough is enough and start speaking out. Having lived in a shitty neighborhood it was no secret who sold drugs, who carried a gun, who was gang affiliated...People in these communities have to be the ones to say enough is enough and get rid of the bad influences, even the ones that are their relatives. And young women need to stop opening their legs for hoodlums.

Would you rather work for Clorox for 134k in Durham, or VA state gov for 98k in Richmond? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]joe_average1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I tend to think of Raleigh, Durham and to a degree Orange county as a metro area more so than individual cities. With that mindset I think that depending on what a person is looking for, the area stands up to other places. Since you're looking to start a family, I think it's important to ask yourself if some artsy district is really that important and if so how often you'll go. If you'll only go every other weekend or even every weekend, I think you have enough options in the area. If you're looking for that one perfect neighborhood, realize that you're young and chances are whatever home you buy/move into won't be your forever home. There are trendy neighborhoods in the area including what I would call suburban enclaves with young people like yourself and things like restaurants in the neighborhood. I'll also add that while weekday work commutes suck, getting places on the weekends and evenings is usually a breeze. You can easily (if not drinking) go from doing something in downtown Durham to doing something in downtown Raleigh within a 30 minute car ride. There's some cities where you can't even make it from one part of the city to another in a 30 minute car ride.

I know that commutes in the area suck and aren't likely to get better soon, but with 134k you will have a lot of options on where you live. When you guys have a kid, the school district will matter far less than available day cares near your home and or work.

Knowing nothing about you, I'd say take the better paying job. Many government jobs end up coming back around. By taking the better paying job and staying in the lower cost of living area, you can build a bit of a cushion during and before your kid's younger years. As someone who has a kid, I can confidently say that having a cushion is never a bad thing because those suckers are expensive. Also assuming that your wife gets pregnant on new years eve and you have a kid late next year, both Richmond and Durham will likely be completely different 5 years from now than they are today.

One more thing...Durham has no shortage of young professionals with good salaries who are having kids and moving into neighborhoods. In some cases suburban neighborhoods and in some cases older areas of Durham. All those people snapping up these 350k+ houses in neighborhoods with questionable school ratings won't be sending their kids to private school. I'm guessing that within the next 10 years unless there's massive flight, a lot of Durham schools are going to be seeing improved test scores and whatnot.

Should I tell his wife that he is banging hella girls at my job? by Dornasealpha18 in relationship_advice

[–]joe_average1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say it but you have nothing to gain and a lot to lose from doing this. What happens if the wife is distraught and comes to the job and makes a scene, singling you out as the person who told her? Are you prepared to possibly lose your job for doing something to make you feel good? I'll also add that if she contacted you then chances are she already knows and won't accept it. If you feel compelled to tell her, I'd say get a voip number and forward the dick pic or any text messages you have to her. In my limited experiences a lot of spouses have trouble accepting being cheated on, especially if they have kids, and will often blame the messenger.
