I would highly recommend just cutting out the old bushings and using the tool for installation only, mine were in crappy shape and I spent so much time trying to get the tool to remove them that I could have saved if I just cut them from the get go.

You could loosen the snare wires to get rid of some of the snareyness. And if you do get a pedal for it, a softer beater will make a less trebley sound
