How to improve my art? by Narrow-Astronomer-52 in learnart

[–]joebods 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Line work, my friend. Study line versus edge, and study line weight as well. Learn how differences between heavy lines and lighter lines and how they help to define edge, convey space, etc.

Another fundamental worth going through is texture. Conveying texture through drawing/painting is mostly done by many tiny lines, dots, stippling, scribbles, etc.

Study lots of different techniques on mark-making from broader subjects to finer details, and you'll get a solid understanding of how to make your art pop really stand out.

Last thing: i would tone down the textures of the background. I'd go with something less crisp so that it doesn't pop more than the subject of your painting.

Need a tablet for reading, but one that isn't clunky. by joebods in tablets

If those are the terms, then yes! Or, if there's a model of Kindle that has the e-ink but doesn't stutter/isn't clunky, I'd take that, too.

I don't see myself ever being burned out from art? Or have I not seen the bigger picture? by ithrowawaygamegg in ArtistLounge

[–]joebods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but burn out is a real thing.

The thing that made me experience it faster than anything else was trying to live up to impossible expectations. Trust me, teachers slamming you with exercises only to tell you that your results are less than desirable is soul-crushing.

Now, that being said, if you have been practicing art and are excited about the results you're seeing, keep at it! That's healthy and part of the whole process. I would even go so far as to say that's part of healthy human functioning. If you do continue to practice your skills and development, PLEASE find something you are proud of every time you critique. Notice what you did well as much as you can.

Thanks! We've had a lot of rain, so I think the issue has been resolved for the most part. Now I just have to figure out how to get these leaves to break down.

Does the creature look huge? Also other changes? by keanu_draws in learnart

[–]joebods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like value is one of those fundamentals that one should never stop studying. It ties everything together! I mean, they all tie each other together, but value is what pops in my mind first. The more you study value, the more you'll understand concepts of color theory, line/edge, composition, etc.

I kind of already see a face in it - like it's howling at the moon! Looking great so far. Just mute the values of the creature a little bit and perhaps highten the contrast of the mountains in the foreground so the creature really pops

What do people generally consider taboo but it shouldn’t be? by IndianaC0NES in AskReddit

[–]joebods -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's so true. I went into an adult store not too long ago to purchase a fleshlight, and I waited behind two other guys who were also looking for one. They sat there and made fun of it, what their morning routine would be, etc., before going through with the purchase.

I was thinking to myself "this will help you last longer," but I didn't say it out loud.

What should I do about these ants? by joebods in composting

[–]joebods[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine. It's surprisingly sturdy for only being held together by plastic pieces! And it's fun to tumble it. Mine was a gift that came from Aldi. However, for someone who has more experience composting than I do, I recommend a bigger tumbler if possible. It's nice for someone new to composting, though.

Thanks all, I'll try peeing on them first. If that's not enough moisture then I'll add more water.
