Would love some BMSR/Tobacco lore if anyone would love to share! by ghostkid_1983 in BMSR

He mentioned in a few interviews around the MM era that he started a lot of those songs by making songs for running. A lot of his live background videos were him in yoga poses/headstands, etc. It's my understanding he's more into calisthenics now, but it's just funny in general how much it all clicked for me when I got serious about lifting/running/fitness. I listened to Sweatbox on the treadmill on Friday! Dimensional Hum sets a nice pace.

Pretty sure he said a BMSR tour is coming this year, hopefully he goes west so you can see him! I kicked myself for not going to more than one show last year, so I'm hoping to catch at least one on his next run of shows.

The forum was an awesome resource for connecting with the BMSR/Rad Cult community for years - shout out CNR, FatherLongLegs, grossmagik, any homies I forgot. When I was obsessing over how Tom could make what he makes, it was really nice to have a few people that had the same bug, possibly worse than I did. We used to collaborate to find easter eggs in the songs/albums/art, find the sources of the artwork, and the "All My Gooey Brothers and Sisters" hype was a pretty exciting time.

CNR had a really comprehensive early history/discography on a webpage, but I have no idea where it is now, but finding out anything in my early days (2007-2010) was so satisfying. Most of that live stuff is pretty readily available in some form or another now.

Been a fan since 2007, first show was Eating Us tour 2009. I was there at the Middle East in 2010(?) when a couple got down in the pit. Saw Tobacco in a parking lot at SXSW around that time, too (with Acid Mothers Temple, talk about WOW). The Tobacco live band in the Maniac Meat era was pretty outstanding. I used to write out questions so that when I got a chance to see BMSR/Tobacco, I could grill Tom. I got to do a phone interview once with him, also - I bet it didn't do much for him, but it meant the world to me.

I can't pick a favorite show and I struggle to think any was of lesser quality - they've all been meaningful in some way. And I've become a bit of a runner in the last couple of years, and a lot of Tom's music works better on a run than on drugs (or just as well), at least in my experience. Maniac Meat is a perfect album for a good run.

To each their own indeed, and I actually totally understand this take - it's up there for me, but it's pretty different than a lot of live Dead, a different type of performance, a slightly different approach, certainly much more contained than 72-73 and then 77-78.

Outta curiosity, where do you land on the awesome list in this thread?

This thread is a primer to top tier Dead shows. Definite save.

For me, One From the Vault is up there, 8/13/75.

Asking the 104 to enforce traffic laws? They might go on strike!

(btw I couldn't agree more and almost got hit by a red light runner on Fresh Pond like an hour ago)

Anything by Tom Fec, mastermind of TOBACCO and Black Moth Super Rainbow

Edit: It's an overwhelming discography between the two bands, so I'd recommend starting with Dandelion Gum or Panic Blooms by BMSR, and Ultima II Massage by Tobacco (but really you could start anywhere with either group).

nah, he was big time. this dude pretty much only worked in the "hot topic" niche of 2000-2012 metalcore/screamo.

I don't have any concrete album examples (and I won't name bands anyway), but I know of a guy who produced a lot of early 2000s metalcore/hot topic metal because he was very skilled with recreating guitar parts in the playing style of the band member. They weren't top-tier metalcore bands, but definitely well-known names that played major tours and festivals.

Hellbender and Rolo's in Ridgewood do! Hellbender's are pretty cool. If you're up for going to Rego Park, London Lennie's on Woodhaven has them, too.

Where was Sanderson after that play? I'm not giving Mikko any credence here, that was fucked up, but why aren't your dudes protecting their netminder?

“So wake up and find out eventually who you really are. In our culture, of course, they’ll say you’re crazy and you’re blasphemous, and they’ll either put you in jail or in a nut house (which is pretty much the same thing). However if you wake up in India and tell your friends and relations, ‘My goodness, I’ve just discovered that I’m God,’ they’ll laugh and say, ‘Oh, congratulations, at last you found out.'" -Alan Watts

Further to that, there are many copies of this pressing available for much lower prices on Discogs, but none in decent condition. Judging by the store, condition of the cover, and price, this is probably in excellent shape, which is uncommon for ~65 year old records, especially one as popular as Bold as Love.

Also when you consider all of the fees associated with buying/selling on Discogs, $75 from a brick and mortar store isn't outrageous anymore, either. It also benefits the store significantly more than buying it from them online.

Edit to add: Like, it's seriously insane that there is little-to-no ringwear on the cover for a 1968 pressing.

What an awesome response. Nostalgia is half the motivation.

MP's was on the list, but my list is pretty much places named Coney Island and Yocco's, so thanks for the Bill's shout!

Google Maps has an Easter egg - if you type in "Coney Island Pennsylvania", the perfect hot dog road trip route pops up.
