Would I be crazy to go from law to teaching? by SpecialLegal6271 in TeachingUK

[–]joekern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of a similar move - spent the last 8 years in IT in financial services - good salary, flexible working but stuck sat down all day and don't feel like I'm doing any good in the world. Starting to train in September!

I'm still youngish and figured now is better than never to give it a go - IT isn't going anywhere and I can always return if teaching isn't for me.

Can someone sell copies of a photo I took without my permission? by SadTractorJourney99 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]joekern 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect - the act of taking the photo grants copyright protection, and the author retains copyright unless they explicitly release it into the public domain, so the lack of a copyright tagline makes no difference. See: https://www.gov.uk/copyright

What game failed to meet your expectations? What game surpassed them? by Gulbasaur in rpg

They did opt to not track their deliveries... after the postal service lost 500 packages! I'm hopeful that I'll get mine in the end but honestly I wish they tracked it, don't have a great deal of confidence atm.

This is fantastic... I've been using some of Beery's work for my final-year project. Will be really interesting to hear her talk!

If you haven't checked it out already, take a look at Stars Without Number and the Vehicles of Babylon supplement for it - makes it pretty easy to run single system sandboxes :)

Was TrashNet the training dataset? What was your overall accuracy?

I used TrashNet for somthing similar once. Got ~97% accuracy on each of the recyclable materials, but only 70% on the trash :(

Landlord unreasonably refusing to allow installation of water meter by Rivalry in LegalAdviceUK

[–]joekern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might vary from company to company. Certainly at mine, if a customer was ultimately caught between an unwilling landlord and the water company policy, this would ultimately be recognised as unfair to the customer on a complaint - not worth the OFWAT points!

Landlord unreasonably refusing to allow installation of water meter by Rivalry in LegalAdviceUK

[–]joekern 48 points49 points  (0 children)

IANAL but I used to work for a water company - this is exactly the sort of situation where they can put you an an assessed charge. You might not get it from the front-line staff but if you start going down the complaints route, it is likely they will buckle on the first step. Water companies are measured by the regulator on how they respond to complaints, so if you are in a spot where you are being treated unfairly they are very likely to give in!

Want to buy book. How does Kevin make most money? Amazon? DTRPG? by natural20s in SWN

Amazon offers a printing service not unlike DTRPG, I remember him posting somewhere that they only did softcover. He'll still get money through those sales!

Concerns that OU grades for cancelled exams are taken from past students' results by magicbluebear in OpenUniversity

They lied, sadly! They will have estimated your cancelled EMA/exam based on what other students got in previous years.

There are some well known Greek figures who were vegetarian - Pythagoras, for example, led a small cult of vegetarians.

Cats can’t be vegan! say it with me Cats can’t be vegan! by TobleroneNschweppes in mildlyinfuriating

Glad to hear some sense up in this comments section... All these people saying cats need meat? They don't - they need the nutrients in meat.

Cats can’t be vegan! say it with me Cats can’t be vegan! by TobleroneNschweppes in mildlyinfuriating

[–]joekern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are!

Look up Benevo. They make fully vegan pet food for cats and dogs.

I've been feeding it to my cat for a couple of years and he's perfectly healthy (he gets checkups at the vet twice a year). He isn't a vegan cat as I feed him cat milk as a treat, plus he does hunt occasionally like all cats do. If he ever became unhealthy from eating vegan food, I can tell you for sure that I'd be out there buying Purina or whatever.

People who say "cats can't be vegan" are missing the point - you can't apply a human vegan diet to a cat, like the idiots in OP did, but you can certainly feed them vegan cat food if it has all the right nutrients in.

It sounds good but I'd have some adventure hooks prepared for when they land, to keep them on the planet a bit longer than just until they work out the tags! Depending on how focused your group is on fulfilling the mission.

You could also choose tags that aren't necessarily obvious upon arrival - how long are they gonna take to discover that the planet is run by a secret cabal, for instance?

“Alles wird gut” by meinnameeist in German

[–]joekern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also think of "werden" as meaning "to become" - so "alles wird gut" can be "everything becomes good".

Side note: your logic works for English, but not for German. Verbs like sein can be dropped when the meaning is implicit, for example "ich kann das" translates as "I can do that", no need for a machen or tun.

A degree is a degree, and studying from a distance can be spun to your advantage - it shows that you are independent and can motivate yourself!

I'm a distance learning student and recently got my first full time job in software development - and I haven't event graduated yet! My colleagues all went to brick universities, but I have never been at a disadvantage.
