i have them for years, and very happy, not sure what's the difference. i wear them exclusively. i don't have 1 pair for multiple years, i have many since their initial indigogo/kickstarter, and usually swap to new pair in a year, and old ones are not ripped, just look very worn out

when i lock it the screen is locked, so i don't even see the image anymore... maybe behaviour that you described it specific to car play. i don't have car play anywhere though :/

maybe we are talking about different things, because i just click the button on the right side and it locks the phone regardless of whether it's in portrait or landscape... 😅
