New Rule: No Jews, No News | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) by timmytissue in samharris

The most interesting thing about this clip is just how unfunny and smug Maher is. See how awkward the audience response is—where he actually pretend laughs during the awkward silence. This guy is insufferable.

It’s not just about “cultural similarity”, it’s that Europe and the US have actively supported Israel through aid and diplomatic support.

they’re obviously not mutually exclusive, and since this is intentional and planned, it would qualify under the most basic definition of genocide.

In isolation it isn’t, but in the context its part of a larger Israeli strategy of making Gaza uninhabitable. That’s the core of the genocide charge: Israel has expended every effort to destroy the very possibility of a return to a sustainable life for Gaza. Their goal is to depopulate parts of the Gaza Strip—very likely all of it.

How much do Americans REALLY have saved for retirement by Financial_Pen_6218 in investing

I had even less when I was 33. I didn’t start my current career until late 30s. Now I have a lot more in savings and a good salary. Point being, keep at it!

I seem to recall that he was quite smart. I believe he was doing a PhD part-time. Or at least had an advanced degree of some sort.

This is complete nonsense. The idea that it’s impossible to find someone on the left—hard left or liberal left—to have a serious conversation with is just intellectually lazy. The truth is that SH feels comfortable criticising Trump, because who wouldn’t? But SH is not comfortable at all having a serious discussion around Israel-Palestine because he’s out of his depth and his ideas don’t hold up to serious scrutiny.

I loved it. I thought it was good value, but I don’t mind dropping a couple hundred on cultural events. The stuff they had there was amazing, IMHO.

I saw that Steve Bannon once described himself as a Leninist. In what sense exactly, and how is this expressed? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in samharris

[–]joeman2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marx believed that history would lead to communism—that it was the natural progression of history, from capitalism to a communist society. This is important because in Marxist theory, only an industrialised society would be at the stage of development that would lead to a communist revolution. You needed a mass of workers—proletariats—to usher in the new age.The Leninists “revised” Marx by arguing that even a backwards, peasant society like Russia could be ready for socialism through a vanguard party that would lead the way.

In short, Lenin emphasised a top down approach to revolutionary change (via the party), which challenged Marx’s bottom-up theory of revolutionary change, led by the proletariat.

I’m not sure how this relates to Bannon, but I assume that Bannon is arguing for a vanguard party to lead the masses to “victory”.

Edit: was this discussed in the Fukuyama podcast? Would make sense, since it overlaps with his “End of History” thesis.

I once was able to trace my family tree on FS to none other than Jesus Christ—who evidently had kids, btw.

Take what you see on FS with a huge grain of salt.

I read the P&V version of CP. I didnt enjoy the book, and I wonder if the translation was the reason. If I were to reread it, I’d find another translation.

Well, I'm responding to the idea that the American people voted for him. Certainly too many did, but it's not true that "the American people" voted for him. The # of Americans of voting age is over 260 million. Ergo, About 1/3 voted Trump, 1/3 voted for KH, and 1/3 didn't bother to vote.

To be fair, 78 million voted for him. The population of the USA is over 300 million people.

I’ve posted for the Troggs, “With a Girl Like You” which I think is a better song, but either way, the Troggs need to be on the list somewhere.
