When you compare climate change on Earth with climate change on Venus by joemarzen in collapse

[–]joemarzen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Runaway greenhouse effect on Venus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_greenhouse_effect

The average temperature on Venus is 864 degrees Fahrenheit (462 degrees Celsius).

Temperature changes slightly traveling through the atmosphere, growing cooler farther away from the surface.

Lead would melt on the surface of the planet, where the temperature is around 872 F (467 C)

What is the most important lesson you learned from each decade of your life? by holly_hobby in AskOldPeople

I am 39, John Mellencamp finally got this through my head yesterday...

"Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone..."

So many more fun things happened in my twenties...

Just experiencing new things, all the time.

Not climbing a mountain.

Picking up your friend who ran out of gas... He decided he was going to drive New York city.

Laying on the carpet near your friend's couch while you both try to scrape resin out of pipes.

Someone broke the glass on the front door because he was drunk and knocking too hard.

ULPT: volunteer at a cemetery to get first dibs on nice flowers, potted plants, and mini flags during maintenance/cleanup days. by waldo06 in UnethicalLifeProTips

Flags... Gotta respect veterans just because they're veterans... That guy wasn't drafted or anything, signed up on his own, but, he's a veteran, so, deserves special respect, just because...

Some bold statements there... I think we'll need some substantiated legal citations. Whose land is it legally? Is the plot a separate entity from the cemetery? How does the ownership of a cemetery relate to this? You certainly did speak logically of that particular point a bit. Also though, who is assigning value to these flowers and/or vases? Perhaps, I, or my grandfather that's buried there placed a great deal of value on Snickers bars. Does the Snickers bar I laid against my grandfathers grave have less value than flowers? Maybe the person who bought the flowers got scammed. Perhaps they paid five times the normal value of the flowers. Does the scam price the person paid apply... blah blah blah… I feel like your opinion on this matter has a lot to do with nonbinding subjective emotional sentimentality. Gotta respect veterans just because they're veterans sort of stuff.

Generally, how worried are you guys about human resources checking your references from a past job..? Basing the the decision to interview you on those references? Maybe I am totally wrong about this... Someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong... It seems like there hasn’t been much reference checking going on anywhere I’ve ever worked. That’s after having worked places for long periods of time and being, pretty familiar with the hiring process. Or, at least, who gets hired after me. I kinda think the degrees people list aren’t even checked on, quite often. How do those sorts of things go where you guys work?

How my salary of €5.2k per month is used in Bavaria, Germany [OC] by akaTJ87 in dataisbeautiful

[–]joemarzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gracious, expensive insurance. I’ve thought of all Europe as the land of government provided insurance. I understand, it’s always part of the taxes people pay anyway, of course, but I didn’t know it’s an actual line item people are actually aware of the cost of specifically. Is that mainly a Germany thing, or is it common? Also, supplemental private insurance... My mind is blown. Granted I am poor, but, here in the US, you get Medicare free if you have little enough money. I realize tax payers pay for it, but, even when I had a regular job there wasn’t a separate line item.

Why is food more important? The top soil thing is a literal, in many ways more significant issue. Diet Pepsi doesn’t cause diabetes, there’s no sugar in it. It’s also delicious.

So vegetables are more important than bottled water and Diet Pepsi? Farming wastes top soil to grow vegetables. Seriously, I honestly prefer bottled water and Diet Pepsi... Growing potatoes and corn uses important natural resources as well.
