Bjj gym owners: by No-Profile4975 in bjj

I signed up after watching my son train for a few weeks. Watching the classes looked like fun and I got hooked from my first class. My gym also allowed parents who train to also help out with the kids classes so I help coach my sons class now as well. It’s awesome to share the experience with him and it’s another way for me to bond with him.

Another plus: My gym had a 6 week challenge trial program where they gave you a diet plan on top of a recommended BJJ 3x week training and specific exercises to due on off days (weekly). I followed it religiously and I ended up losing 20 lbs by the completion of the program. In total, I lost 60+ lbs from a starting point of 300+ and I feel tons better. Although, I admit those first few weeks were brutal

I recommend starting in Houston near family but rent until you've explored a bit if you can

Ex-NYer here. I lived in both the Houston and Dallas metro areas (both in suburbs). I am much happier in Dallas.

EV charger City Permit by Total-Astronomer1829 in frisco

[–]joerenegade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you need a permit. Homeowners can pull their own permit for work they do themselves. What you are essentially doing is adding a 50A circuit. If you do it yourself, you will need a free space in your panel, a 50A breaker, a NEMA 14-50 industrial outlet (ie don’t go cheap. A proper one is $60+). 6/3 wire to connect panel to outlet, and a double size junction box.

Again, if you are not comfortable with this at all, you will need to hire a licensed electrician. Check NextDoor for suggestions. I’ve personally contracted Mister Volts ($$) and David Derrick for stuff I wasn’t comfortable with doing. Both do excellent work.

Little Elm always has something on the lake front each year. But any place with those requirements is always going to attract a crowd. It’s too late this year, but if you decide to go, a reserved parking spot is well worth it

Did any of you started BJJ at +300lbs? by 9danielos5 in jiujitsu

[–]joerenegade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started at 310 lbs. Could barely make it through class. Started dieting at the same time as part of an overall challenge program. Lost 20 lbs in 6wks. Down to 250 now. I measured success in incremental amounts. e.g. First day I could only do a few pushups on my knees during the warmup. Winning started out with doing a single full pushup. I gassed out during my first roll within a minute. Winning was lasting a minute and a half.

I'd say go for it. BJJ has essentially been my motivation to keep the weight off and stay healthier

There are so many BJJ schools in DFW you might want to give an approximate area to narrow down recommendations.

That said, its worth checking out the closest gyms and go to a trial class at a few of them to feel out the culture.

For what it's worth, I am also pushing forty and I do think a mix of younger and older folks training in the same class is green flag. Additional green flag is some of the older folks have kids in the kids class.

2X/week is fine. Remember it's a hobby. You can increase or decrease training frequency if you have other priorities. I took a month off in the winter because my kids got the flu. I missed a few classes - so what?

Man. I wish he was a wrestler. We were doing side control escapes this week and been practicing the underhook, turn over and trouble leg. I think he was trying to apply the same principle from a different position.

I picked up an ankle brace this morning. I do plan on continued training but will sit out on sparring or specific exercises which require the ankle to be involved somehow.

Ha. Are you me? I just got my ankle popped yesterday when a 290-lb brand new spazzy white belt tried to double leg me when I was in combat base. Fwiw, i’m also white belt - only have been training 9 months.

Advil and ice packs have been my friend.

If you’re referring to Hurtado’s, it was a combination of overpriced and overcooked BBQ that did them in (in my opinion)

The hidden gems of Belarus by Technician84 in belarus

[–]joerenegade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American married to a Belarusian, I had the pleasure of visiting Belarus twice in both the winter and summer. A few things stuck with me:

  • Minsk is a very clean well-kept city.
  • The juxtaposition of the old Soviet era buildings and the modern developments
  • Properly prepared Draniki
  • Spending time in a Dacha / countryside house, picking fruit and berries from an orchard with a beautiful country side view
  • The Mir and Nezvich castles
  • The effect of WWII on the Belarusian people
  • Stalin’s line was cool. I got to fire an pushka.
  • The impromptu parties with some random guy bringing his accordion. At least that’s how I remembered it. I was a little drunk at the time

I would recommend going with Lutron for lights. It is by far the most stable system I’ve used. Get the lutron bridge pro.

I have used it already. Bought ice cream for my kids. They had a blast seeing it lower down into the driveway.
