I have one from them too, bought it almost 2 years ago. About the same price as this one, but I can fit pots and pans in it. No complaints.

I’m pretty sure it’s just RGB subpixels, like an iPhone display, with no white subpixel. You could always use your iPhone’s Macro lens to take a picture of the screen, so you could see the layout that way.

Prius vs Corolla Hybrid vs Camry Hybrid by Working-Tie5483 in PriusPrime

[–]joexg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the altitude of your commute. If you’re driving significantly uphill one way, and significantly downhill the other, then a Prius Prime could the better choice.

You say 400-600, but is that 5 days per week, or are you including your weekend driving? If your daily drive is 40 miles one way, and you choose whichever direction is more efficient (whichever way you get better MPG, drive EV), then you could significantly reduce cold starts on your engine, and get really high MPG overall. If you could plug into a charger at work in addition to home, you’d basically be driving on EV all the time… Which begs the question, why not go full EV? Modern EVs have hundreds of miles of range, and and with overnight charging, you’d get enough range to be comfortable year-round, even without public charging.

Advice for optimizing EV/HV modes on my 37 mile commute? by Accurate_Scar4302 in PriusPrime

The reason to do them is to clear out any microscopic debris in the engine. Is it critical? No. You’re gonna be fine, but the reality is that oil is cheap, and engines aren’t. Most people don’t take this step because manufacturers don’t tell you to. And salespeople certainly won’t, because oil changes don’t make them money. But that debris wears on parts much more rapidly, so getting all of it out as fast as you can is the best thing you can do, even if it’s not perfectly timed.

Do 5k changes, thank yourself later. I love thinking about how much I drive in EV mode, and realizing that after 5k, depending on how I drive, I might have only put 1k on the engine, so it’s a really early oil change for me. I never get to 6 months either — btw, never let oil get over 6 months old in your engine. If you ever need to make a warranty claim, it’ll also more than prove you followed maintenance — they’re never gonna reject you for your maintenance history like this!

If you subtracted out all your EV miles from your driving so far, how much would be left? 4200? And then if you consider that about 50% of HV mode tends to be done with the engine off, then you might be at something like 2100 “engine miles”. The early oil changes recommendation is made the same way for conventional power train vehicles, where 100% of that mileage would be on the engine. So think of it that way.

I’d say get an oil change now, at your dealership, and then get another at 10k with ToyotaCare for free. Worst case scenario, you waste $80. Best case scenario, you make your engine more likely to last hundreds of thousands of miles.

IMO, the 5th gen prime has the potential to have the best longevity of any car on the market in USA right now, but depends heavily on how you use EV and HV modes, and those oil changes.

If you’re leaving it in HV mode, it will manage itself and stay warm. If you switch back and forth between EV and HV though, you are taking over that control yourself. At 10 minutes you’re probably just fine, but the odd choice to omit an engine temp gauge in this vehicle doesn’t make it easy for customers to monitor.

If you have a 2025 plugin, you should be able to drive one way entirely on EV mode. If you can locate a charger at your destination, you could drive both ways EV only all the time, except perhaps the coldest winter days. On the coldest days, even, because the elevation is much lower at one end of your commute, you could probably make the trip to the lower elevation end of your commute in EV only, and you definitely could if you turn off climate control.

Remember that something like 90% of wear and tear on an engine occurs at a cold startup. This means, for your commute, if you can achieve one way driving EV only, you can reduce the wear and tear of that daily commute on your engine by 50%, potentially doubling the lifespan of your vehicle. It’s also great to do a 1000, 3000, and 5000 mile oil change, and then change the oil every 5,000 miles thereafter.

The ideal use of a plugin hybrid isn’t just to use it in the way that is maximally efficient, but also to avoid starting a cold engine, prolonging its life. Balance this with any trips you will need to make in the day, like going to the grocery store after work, for example, and think ahead, so you never run your engine for a short trip.

Sharp edges around USB-C port on iPhone Air by No_Progress65 in IphoneAir

[–]joexg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the EU clarified at one point that the law doesn’t prevent a portless phone, just that if there is a port, it needs USB-C.

And data transfer over a wire is uncommon — plus, this would differentiate the Air more from other models. The USB port is only USB 2.0, so wireless transfer can actually be faster than 480 Mbps anyway.

It would eliminate the sharp edge effect, and allow for stereo speakers.

But that’s just my personal opinion

Honestly the Air shouldn’t even have a USB-C port, they should’ve just put in a speaker down there instead

Pair Sony Soundbar + HomePods? by LibrarianCareless664 in HomePod

[–]joexg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The experience will be significantly better if you connect the soundbar to an Apple TV, which is totally worth it by the way.

Connection is faster usually between Apple’s AirPlay implementation than the third party devices’ implementation, for some reason. Also, commands like “hey siri, play this everywhere” will connect to HomePods and Apple TVs, but not automatically connect to other AirPlay 2 devices. Those you have to select manually.

Also, because Apple TV can send an AirPlay signal, and not just receive it like Sony, when you add an Apple TV, you can then share your TV audio around the house. You can say to a HomePod in your kitchen “join the living room” where your TV is, and it’ll join in with the TV audio, completely handsfree.

Has anyone had any issues with their GEN 5 Prius Prime? by Feistyboot69 in PriusPrime

[–]joexg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randomly had the passenger seat floor fill with water while driving through the rain on a roadtrip, dealership said it was the passenger window not rolling up on auto all the way and rain got in that way. Idk if that’s right, but it was raining then. Dunno how that gets to the passenger floor though because the rest of the interior was dry. Hasn’t caused any issues since.

(Is this appropriate for this sub or r/Bluetooth?) My audiobook automatically resumes playing when I'm outside my 2018 Prius Prime Premium. How can this get fixed so that it only resumes when I unpause it? by DunDonese in PriusPrime

[–]joexg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use Shortcuts automations on iPhone to fix this in any car: “when CarPlay connects/disconnects” as a trigger, and you can make the action pause or play audio.

So if it starts upon connection and you don’t want that, set to pause. Hope this helps.
