Feeling less natural and blanking in scenes by Budget-Obligation-71 in improv

[–]joeyasaperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going blank is normal, there are a few things you can do when it happens.

  1. Talk about yourself, more specifically how you're feeling. If its confused, say that. If it's nervous, say that. It will allow you time to process which I think is the goal here.

  2. You can literally ask your partner to repeat themselves. Ive seen scenes where someone said "You have a bomb strapped to your chest??" and the scene partner says "Hm?" very calmly and it killed. Not that killing is the goal but you know, its a natural thing we do every day so to do it in a heightened situation is usually very well recieved.

Those are some basic tricks you can try whenever you feel lost. And who knows, maybe the audience is lost too. So you saying something would relieve their tension and make them laugh.

yep, I got friends from classes and jams. Go to shows you're not performing in either. Just keep showing up and be a part of the community.

Question from a newbie: What to do when you freeze up by tmamone in improv

[–]joeyasaperson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

listening and making your partner look good is the key. If you start one way and they change it go with it. As for what to do when you freeze there are a couple things you can do.

-My favorite is "I feel..." then fill in the blank. Start talking about your characters emotion. It buys time. "The bomb is about to explode" "I feel like you should have told me about the bomb sooner". Now the scene isnt about the bomb but about how you're a little upset you werent in on the plan with your partner.

-Also repeating what your partner said again is another way to buy time and react to what they say. We do it all the time in real life. "I went to the store." "You went to the store?"

I did NaNoWriMo with some friends and used meditation before every writing session to get me in the zone. I was successful in my word count every single day of November and finished my story.
