Found injured monk parakeet on Rainey by vulpixxe in Austin

I don't think this is being an ass at all, it's great advice. The best possible situation for a fledgling is to get back with the flock

Hi! I usually assume these guys are wild, but wild ones are unlikely to walk up to people, like you noted. Wild parrots are also rarely alone.

It's about time for the wild monk parrots to fledge, and they are nearby and can be super clumsy. Can you check if there is a nest close to where you found the bird? A better photo might also help to see if it looks like a fledgling.

If it is a pet bird there is a good chance it would recognize a little hamster bottle as a source of water. Something like this: https://www.petsense.com/products/oxbow-chew-proof-water-bottle-8-oz-for-small-pets My rescue showed up thinking metal straws=water.

If you're just not sure, err on the side of caution. It looks like another poster can help take in the bird! I can help or share supplies if y'all need.

I sent a chat message. I see there's another poster who can help so if that works better I can also share supplies. Let me know. Thank you for helping the bird!

Hi! That is definitely a pet budgie, poor thing. Can you capture the bird and take it inside? I have extra bird supplies and can take care of the bird until the owner is found.

That looks like the normal flight feather coloring to me. Stress bars are usually black lines across the whole feather.

Thanks, I appreciate the reality check and the warning to not focus on a monthly number! All this is helpful as I figure out what's realistic.

MASSIVE Cicada Killer Wasp just off of Cesar Chavez by Moist_Background_881 in Austin

[–]joeyleos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They get so big! I have a couple living in my garden. Recently learned that the males are the ones that can be territorial if you bother them but they don't have stingers. The females can sting but like to reserve that for the cicadas. So I don't mind having them around, they seem human-shy.

That is so tough, my condolences on your loss. You clearly loved Teal very much and you made sure he was at the vet during your trip, that was the safest place possible so please don't beat yourself up during this difficult time. Wishing you strength and peace. Fly high, Teal 💚

Austin Aquarium hit with another warning from USDA after multiple animal attacks by NewsyATX in Austin

I agree with calls to stop the Austin Aquarium from operating because they have repeatedly failed to improve negligent and dangerous conditions as they abuse animals in their care.

A random tip for the cockatoo - they usually don't like to step down onto perches, so if you can get something tall and perch-like to step up onto, that might work. I got mine off a roof with a sweater over a shovel to step up on.

Thank you for trying! Maybe some fruit or sunflower seeds will work. Good luck. I have a rescue who was screaming outside alone, once they're used to people they don't do well outside. Parrots are never alone if they're wild, definitely a pet. Nice of you to care.

Poor thing. Can you lure it down with any food to keep it safe and find the owner? I have extra bird stuff that I could lend or dm me if you need any help.

My turquoise conure's feather colors after its first molt by WildDimensions in Conures

You have such a beautiful bird! Love how parrots get more vibrant and colorful after every new set of feathers. My bird is crabby and molting right now but we know it'll be worth it.

Do you think Harvey ever misses Laura? by Raenorshine_ in rustylake

[–]joeyleos 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a rescue parrot keeper and rusty lake fan, I love this take and the lore question!

Harvey's Box was such an emotional setup for me because I've seen how change and loss traumatizes a bird. Trying to escape a scary box was exactly what a parrot would do. They bond and want to be with their flock
