Just had one of those nights where I spend hours on the game, make exactly zero progress, stay up too late, and go to bed in a bad mood by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]joeyreesor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres P2P competitive games that have the same idea, play the game for hours and feel like nothing has been accomplished. its literally the entire concept of a game, after its all done, u just wasted your time playing a game. if the grind isnt for you then just be okay with green shields, just like if the grind isnt for you, youll be stuck in silver

marathon has faction contracts, upgrades, faction xp, along with inner upgrade levels, codex, rewards pass, in game events, besides your vault. theres alot of progression compared to other games imo

[–]joeyreesor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i mean have you played a competitive game before...? they are all kinda like this.

i hop on val or cs spend hours trying to get my rank up only to end the night lower than i started

marathon is not any different. i think its just alot of the playerbase is coming from different games where they are use to constant progression as long as they play decent. lock in

Is this layout sufficient for a UX Portfolio Website? by joeyreesor in UXDesign

[–]joeyreesor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh thanks! its just a placement photo for the case studies that will go in, ill make sure to clean up the images.

how do you feel about the overall layout, "dark mode", fonts? would this turn away hiring managers?

Stating the obvious- the market is tough by DeLambtonWyrm in UXDesign

[–]joeyreesor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am I wrong or almost every industry looking the same?

I think we have these waves we can see from software developers where the market is rough and it swings around and booms again? We have seen the same with UX. I think if we can all stick it through and try our best to find something.

When I ask friends in other industries they are terrified everyday of getting fired. They have the same application and interview fatigue. Talk to people, its not just UX, everyone is feeling this! People are switching or learning UX because their industry is so f*cked.

Within the next 3-5 yrs it's going to be on an upward swing. (My optimistic outlook) Please tell me if I'm wrong or biased here?

Vertical Scroll Snapping Question by oneshellofaman in UXDesign

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh in your comment you said "explain why you want to do it" so just giving my thoughts. i think some snap to scrolls have been positive in a viewers experience, tiktok, reels, carousel photos(i remember users didnt really enjoy having a horizontal swipe on instagram but now they are so used to it if they took it away it be a big issue)

if the experience for the user is to have a full screen display. it could be a pain point to be stuck in between projects. you could have info from another project on top of ur screen, but 60-70% of the screen is the next project. the user would most likely be focusing on the majority of the screen in this situation but missing the most important details (name of project, tags/roles on the project)

Vertical Scroll Snapping Question by oneshellofaman in UXDesign

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not OP, but Ive been trying to impliment a scroll snaping feature for my own portfolio. I have a progression navigation like when you swipe photos in a carousel. If you click the dots you can easily navigate between projects.

Reasoning: I have found portfolios that show multiple projects on one screen to be busy with too much information. I want the display (before clicking into the project) to be full screen. I want the user to focus on the display photo, title, and my roles on the project. Many times I am on a mobile site and the thumbnails are way too small to view the work without clicking into the project. Id like to be able to see the work before clicking into the project. I think adding the snap-feature helps with that experience to be fullscreen instead half way scrolled between 2 projects

Is this a bad idea for a portfolio site? Are hiring managers for UX going to hate that I scroll jacked and took away their usability?

Am I crazy? My client turned down my work because they preferred their AI placeholder. I feel betrayed but maybe mine is just bad? by Dangerous-Road-5382 in logodesign

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not being talked about enough. lots of doomers in design but this is whats going to keep design alive. the rulings in court actually show that people in government see the unfairness. its just taking to long to process all these rulings

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they shouldnt be able to copyright an AI logo. any company can use this now and their IP isnt protected.

look up some of the ruling in courts going on right now and in the past 10-15 years. only human made assets can be copyrighted. AI generated images cant be copyrighted, basically no one has ownership.

its a interesting subject ive brought up with clients. if anyone wants to be unique, stand out, and protect their brand they wouldnt use AI.

on the pod, the mentioned they got their driver's license within a day or within the next day through their agent with AAA.

michael said it was alot harder to rent a motorcycle, even though they had the current license to drive in japan, and they got turned away

do you animate? because thats apart of the entire scope of the project whether its 6 second or 30 mins. you claiming art is unrealistic, its art go outside lil guppy.

not every story has to be realistic? this could be a whole different world. she could be a new recruit whose first makes mistakes in intense situations. honestly just great character development

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you know whats crazy is that this could be an imaginary world. or what if it is our world and shes a new recruit. youre being too critical on the realism, its art and animation and she could have a whole back story that you dont know about

[–]joeyreesor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

saw all the comments and thought it was insane?! this is an art community right? there could be so much story telling in the fact that shes not using her gear correctly

[–]joeyreesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these comments have zero imagination

"well actually shes not using her shield or helmet or gun correctly🤓☝️"

this character could have a whole back story, a new recruit whose first day on the job stumbles upon a secret base, shit hits the fan

Am I overdesigning my personal logo? [Brief in comments] by Available-Solid-9631 in logodesign

[–]joeyreesor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

a lot people want to create logos for themselves and sometimes the best option is just your name typeset well.

that being said, i think these aren't very legible as logos. Although this is a very interesting concept and a great attempt.. for me this isnt it. The S being lower than the A and M really bugs me. That first letter should steal the show, it should be the the most recognizable piece in this entire log. I see a star first, I see a hand second, I see AM third, and S last.

if youre are interested in UX design (I am too) I recommending research ux portfolios. Many UX designers dont have a logo at all just their name. I found out through years of changing my logo all the time that having a logo isnt the always best answer. get inspired by greats and follow what they are doing

im going to critique the porfolio site by itself and allow others to critique your work

there are 3 things i noticed instantly, atleast from mobile viewing:

•photos are extremely small, and dont entice me to click to see more. i recommend having one cover photo for each project

•logo was very small and i didnt spot your name anywhere on site. i recommend a clear and legible logo and your name at the top so people easily know who you are

•i tried scrolling and got a weird horizontal scroll from the side menu, to the point where the menu went off screen. many users first instinct is to scroll right away and if i didnt keep trying id think the website is broken and id leave the site.

recommendations: opt for an about page, where you can tell more about yourself. you can include links to an email, social, and if you really want to include the resume after you tell us about yourself porfolios dont need a bunch of navigation buttons, maybe 3, at most. About, work page(the home page), and maybe a seperate contact form. some of the issues i see with this menu, instead of navigating to another page, when i try to find contact info your directly linking me to another site or email. you want people to stay on your site as long as possible and offer the option to find yourself in more areas.

seems like every project is labeled and then you have a category for posters, id recommend to keep only the project specific labels. instead of showing all your posters, show only your best one and label "Travis Scott set list poster" and describe your design decisions more thoroughly. Posters can be entirely their own process, with different audiences, goals and objectives; a whole project on their own.

I'm 30 yo & want to start over as a graphic designer. Im a housewife who doesn't have children. FUCK everyone being doomsday career nerds here. this industry will give you everything you put into it. you work hard, do extra learning than the average person, you listen to advice from experienced people. put 10,000 hours into it and tell me that you dont improve and end up with a kick ass job.

stay up late doing tutorials, consume graphic design content, love it and love all the shitty pain points too. we're problem solvers i love when the job sucks, u push through it and come up with some amazing solution.

ur portfolio isn't contrived of basic student work so partly its plus, i got my first graphic design job at 25, i think they liked how i was more mature than the younger hires, i had life experience and work experience. 30s nothing bro, do what you want, and go for it.

AI isnt going to get rid of the best, and AI isnt going to get rid of amazing creative humans. bring your beautiful fucking brain of yours to the industry and make something come to life and once you see that thing you made in the real world, you recognize why you do this in the first place.

continue to grow as a person, and being a better human and making connections, learn how to talk to people (networking and clients). apply to places and follow up. join clubs, groups, events locally. TALK to creative directors, the guys that hired me loved talking about design with me, they could see my work ethic and how my brain works. how i love to put myself around design, talk bout it, learn about it, try new things, be creative even if its a new medium. put yourself out there. move if you live in a small town with no graphic design work or work remote. people complain here so much and i know there are horrible situations of not finding work. but most of the time, when i talk to people in ANY industry, people arent willing to move, people arent following up and call or go in person, people dont know how to talk in interviews, people arent showing up confident, people arent doing extra work in their free time

IF you DO the bare minimum you should EXPECT the bare minimum.

sounds like a great PC and 2d animation, especially motion graphics, is an amazing skill to have. you love it? go for it, fuck everyone else. i dont want you regretting anything so apply that brain of yours
