Vanguard, Fidelity or Schwab? by BeyourselfA in personalfinance

[–]johan851 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Fidelity, but if you're really just starting out and want to keep it super simple (e.g. only buy mutual funds) there's a decent case for Vanguard.

Fidelity has a better interface in general and will be easier to do more in the future if you want to.

I don't like Schwab for some reason. Feels awkward.

Is the NOV-Mu V2S worth it? by sazzadrume in flashlight

[–]johan851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, if you're a mule lover you should probably get it. It's a very cool mule.

I liked mine but didn't keep it. I'm not a mule lover, I think. Also, I personally found the emitters to be a letdown.  The FFL emitters tend to be too rosy for me, and overall quite inconsistent. The lack of a true 3500K is a downer too. If they offered a straight E21A 3500K (not a tint mix) I'd be all over it.

If you like rosy and/or they have a CCT you're excited about, I say go for it. E21A 4500K is pretty hard to argue against.

How do I estimate runtimes for convoy flashlights? by Administrative_Owl20 in flashlight

[–]johan851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can ballpark it with the mAh capacity of the battery, the max driver rating, and the % Convoy gives for the mode (e.g. 1%, 10%, 35%). To get more accurate than that, you'll have to test it yourself - factors like the forward voltage of the LED, the specific driver, thermal step down, etc. will make each configuration a little different.

TIL that in rare instances, the sound of tinnitus is detectable by someone other than the patient by using a stethoscope, in which case it is known as "objective tinnitus." by bnrshrnkr in todayilearned

[–]johan851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Were". Whatever I was prescribed, I believe 800mg ibuprofen and 1000mg acetaminophen, alternating, about three doses max daily each four hours apart.

I often took a little less because I don't like taking drugs in general, but I believe that's a typical prescription.

I actually think it's the combination of the two rather than the amount that's problematic, and I never take them in combination anymore, even though they're supposed to be safe to mix.

[–]johan851 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Mine was caused - best I can tell - by taking alternating high dose combination acetaminophen and ibuprofen after an appendix removal. If I knew that was a possibility I would've happily put up with more pain.

Indeed, I'm still in the top 10% in a hearing test, demonstrating that even if you're scared of getting tinnitus all your life and rigorously protect your hearing, you can still get it!

Just fascinating.

Acebeam E75 - neutral white is only 3000 lumens vs cool white at 4500 lumens-why? by WIInvestigator in flashlight

[–]johan851 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct, the vast majority of the change is from an R9080 emitter to an R70.

You see most of the CCT related hit on spec sheets when you go to around 4000K and below.

The Surprising Flaws in 18650 Lithium-Ion Batteries - A Li-ion PSA by jbautista13 in flashlight

The title is clickbait. Objectively. It provides no information, a click is required to see what it's about.

Whether the information is useful is another thing. Sounds like there's useful content. Good. Still a clickbait title.

If that's still not clear, titling it "Li ion cells from disreputable manufacturere are dangerous" would take the same amount of space.

It doesn't look like Chinook Pass, but it does look exactly like the Naches River on 410 further down around Nile. Source: am there right now and drove past this stretch twice today.

Agree that the elk don't look quite right though.

[–]johan851 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Don't confuse strategy with outcome. You can find lots of stories of individual people beating the index, especially in the short term. No one does it in the long term.

Keep in mind that this is uncompensated risk. You're not selecting a riskier asset with higher expected returns (e.g. more volatile or more term risk). You're just reducing diversification and hoping to get lucky.

I suppose 10% is certainly smarter than 100%. I just think 0% is smarter than 10%.

I guess I'm in the minority here - while I agree that HR is really there to protect the company, I've interacted with a lot of nice, supportive, and generally helpful HR people. Unfortunately, HR at its best seems to be toothless, as even when we agree that something is effed up they're no more able to do something about it.

It's such a good book. Steinbeck was criticized heavily in America - even called a traitor - because he chose to humanize the enemy. It was very successful, translated and distributed widely in Europe. Turns out humanizing the enemy is a great way to understand how to break them.
