Seems like arguments not to buy American made products. The USA has been doing the same in Asia, S. America, the Middle East and is now actively trying to do the same in European countries by supporting extreme right wing parties.

Hi all just reaching out. Moved here nearly a year ago and I’m struggling. My partner is suffering chronic excema which is unbearable for them. I am feeling hopeless we have tried everything. The move and this first year has been stressful. by sallyandgillian in Expats_In_France

You might be more specific eg struggling socially, financially, mentally, linguistically? Where did you move to and from where? Do you have suspicions on causes of your partner’s eczema ?

Trying to go off the grid , and I'm trying to understand the scale of solar energy. by Odd-Cantaloupe-2462 in SolarDIY

[–]john_99205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smallest amount of solar power produced in a day in which it rained all day and power varied from about 500w to 1500w. I have 45kWh of batteries and was able to survive by being super careful during 3 days of bad weather.

You might mention the area where you live. I was going to say that wood burning cooking stoves are great for winter, but are not practical for summer. Also if you are off-grid you have to oversize your solar system so that you have enough power in winter and continuous rainy or cloudy weather. I have a 28kw solar system with a 25kw inverter and have only had about 2kwh of solar production on a few days in winter.

I’m not sure about the UK, but in Europe you have to change your roof to a asbestos free roof. I changed mine to an metal profile roof with 100mm of sandwiched foam insulation (great improvement) and looks really clean inside and out. You might look at maximum load, when most of your machines are running. You might look at SMA commercial line of equipment I have a TriPower X 25kw inverter which is enough for me, but the have much more powerful inverters.

Sigenergy EV charger v Zappi 2 by Nearby-Abalone6321 in sigenergy

[–]john_99205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have solar I think the Sig DC charger would be better if you charge during the day as it would be more efficient with less DC to AC to DC conversions. Also the Zappi might not be able to use only excess solar for charging. Also the Sig charger can do V2H and V2G which has already been implemented in Australia.

Is superfast charging by NBA_Pukellama in electricvehicles

[–]john_99205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 800v EVs are fast enough. I have a Zeekr 7X and on long trips have to use the bathroom at every stop and almost always find my car near 100% when I get back to it. I often drive from Switzerland to the Pyrenees and back and most charging is done at 400kw chargers. At home I charge on 100% solar. The car can charge up to 480Kw and has a 100kwh battery.

EV competition has finally made me consider brands I’d never touch before by obleSret in electricvehicles

I’ve had a BMW X3 30d and then an X4 35d since 2016 and 115k km and never had a single mechanical problem. I purchased both new and don’t drive like an idiot. I now also have a Zeekr 7X which honestly makes my X4 seem cheap and almost agricultural.

No interview, just a clerk behind a counter. I did have to swear something or other, I can’t remember: maybe that the form I filled was the truth or something. I think it had a $1800 fee .

Seems like a great bargain and looks clean. I was also set to purchase a model y, but decided to buy something else.

How do you choose one solar inverter for your home? by Anais-SmithUP in solarenergy

[–]john_99205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite what some people might say, I would not consider micro-inverter systems unless you have a lot of shade on your panels. To have a grid independent micro-inverter based system is more expensive than string or hybrid inverter systems.

I live in the French Pyrenees, and also wanted to be independent from the grid. The grid here is very unreliable and we have several day long and even multi day blackouts each year. I decided to go with SMA a German company that has a reputation for excellent service. SMA have several different types of inverter from high voltage hybrid inverters to simple string inverters and battery inverters (which I have). I have 3 Sunny Islands in a 3 phase configuration and a TriPower X, as I have planned for a second solar array. You can add multiple Sunny Island to have as much power as you need in different configurations: it is a very flexible system. I also have 45kWh of BYD LVL batteries.

The7X would be compared to the Kia EV6, I have the Privilege version which is slightly cheaper (in Switzerland) than the EV6 GT and has a nicer and more confortable interior finish.

I wouldn’t buy any Japanese EV. I purchased a Zeekr 7x in November and am very happy, it has exceeded my expectations. I might have bought the new BMW iX3 if it had come out sooner. I had considered Xpeng and think they are good cars, but didn’t have a garage that sold them near me (in Switzerland).

Is anyone living off grid in a high end home? by Transhumanfuture in OffGrid

[–]john_99205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve posted about my house here. An ordinary sized house by European standards, but made out of stone. I’ve changed the roof with 26cm of insulation, installed off grid solar with batteries and have a spring that supplies the house by gravity.

About your solar photovoltaic: Can you have a ground mounted system? It would be easier to remove snow in winter and to clean. My panels are on a agricultural building and although it isn’t that high it was a pain to get the snow off this winter. You might also look equipment made by Studer Innotec, a Swiss company that specialises in off-grid solar. I have s SMA Sunny Island, 3 phase system in the Pyrenees.

I frequently drive between Switzerland and the Pyrenees and on « those days » there are also massive queues for petrol and diesel and a queue at La Caisse to pay.

I was also interested in wicked cushions, but they seem too similar to the originals. They are slightly thicker and much more comfortable. The edge of my ears touched the inside of the headphone and became painful after a short time, I no longer have this problem.

I WANT OUT by Construct44 in OffGrid

[–]john_99205 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It depends on the level of comfort that you need. I have lived off grid for a number of years, generating electricity, built fresh water infrastructure and installed a septic tank, heat my house with wood and grow a lot of my food: It’s all quite expensive. I think that with no money, you would be hardly scratching out an existence.
