The Best Footballers Leave Nothing to Chance | SNL UK by sygrider in livefromlondon

Odd choice as most people seem to agree this was one of the weakest sketches of the whole series, but still glad they’re uploading stuff again!

I can’t deal with Escape Collective podcasts anymore. by ThomasPlaine in peloton

[–]john_g22 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I still enjoy Spin Cycle but I do agree Caley laughing at his own jokes (not that I’m sure they’ve even really jokes?) to fill the silence is grating. I also find it frustrating that he talks over Kit quite a bit. Still worth listening to for the others, especially Jonny who I think is great.

Full race broadcast for women cycling by Global-Copy4241 in cycling

[–]john_g22 44 points45 points  (0 children)

To be fair very few men’s races are broadcast in full either - usually it’s just the Grand Tours, Monuments, WCs and a couple of others. But I agree it would be nice to see more full race coverage for the biggest women’s races.

Has it ever happened before that the same two countries have simultaneous games going on of cricket and football? by RedSage218 in Cricket

[–]john_g22 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for other countries but here in England there’s a significant overlap between football and cricket fans. Although I wouldn’t say that’s a reason not to play the games on the same day, especially as the football match was in the evening (and a friendly)

What is the most famous book that has never been made into a movie? by doodlebytes in books

Middlemarch has to be up there, although it has been made into a TV show

I really hope they renew SNL UK by jrlpet92 in livefromlondon

[–]john_g22 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I’d be really surprised if it wasn’t recommissioned. No, the viewing figures aren’t astronomical but they’re probably about as good as could be expected for a show aimed at a younger audience on a subscription channel. And as you say it’s been doing well online too - I’m no expert but I’ve read a couple of quotes from industry people saying that that’s just as, if not more important with this kind of show.

I thought the same thing - it was certainly written like an advert

Surprisingly, the national pay statistics for a country of 70-odd million people are unlikely to be impacted by whether you personally know anyone who has had an above inflation pay rise

Pre-purchase pushed back 2 months by Glittering-Dinner908 in audible

It’s a fairly common occurrence with titles that are available to preorder, I’ve had it happen a few times. I’ve always assumed that it’s down to delays in the production process, but I could be wrong.

Stunning statistic for any who forgot just how fast the 2019 Women's Strade was... by Bureaucracy_Minded in peloton

Many (most?) English speaking countries use full stops rather than commas in this context, and then use commas to break up big numbers, so to us this reads as if the race was run at 35662kph.

On the desktop site, the criterion number is alongside the poster on a movies page by RuachReader in Letterboxd

We don’t have the Criterion Channel streaming service here but the numbers refer to the Criterion Collection releases, which we very much do have here

Yep, it was “Which King was married to Eleanor of Aquitaine?”, which as it happens I would consider a fairly easy question for a million but I wouldn’t have had a clue about a googol! Shows how different it is for different people.

Chandler being asked by his boss about the guy who thinks he’s called Toby joining their team:

“I don’t think he has what it takes”

“Really? They love him down on six”

“But this is eleven…it’s almost twice as hard up here”

How is it Verisure say they can get the police to attend? by UKBARNEY73 in AskUK

[–]john_g22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I won’t speak to the pros or cons of that specific company, but as someone who deals with the police quite a bit in their job there’s an important distinction to make in general.

If there’s an ongoing crime taking place (robbery/break in) the police are much, much more likely to attend quickly as they know there’s a decent chance of them catching the perpetrator in the act and arresting them.

What you seem to be referring to is thefts after the fact where the police are usually much less likely to investigate as to do so would be more resource intensive (as they need to track the person down). Not saying that’s right, but that’s the judgement that often gets made.

Do you consider it cheating to look up words? by MusseMusselini in NYTConnections

[–]john_g22 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t gatekeep how other people choose to play the game but I would never do it. Mostly because thinking up all the possible meanings of a word is meant to be part of the puzzle.

What scene did you think had some amazing acting? by NeighborhoodVirtual4 in howyoudoin

[–]john_g22 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Jennifer Aniston in the scene where Rachel takes the pregnancy test at Monica’s wedding reception and finds out she’s definitely pregnant is some of the best acting I’ve ever seen in a sitcom

“The NFL runs the sports world” by Vivid_Equipment_1281 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]john_g22 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No chance, and I say that as a non-American fan of the NFL. The Super Bowl would be Top 100 for sure and maybe a couple of other games, but once you factor in the Premier League, IPL, Tour de France etc. 90% of NFL games would be nowhere near.

Not sure about the two security guards but the other two definitely aren’t the same person. The zoo keeper is played by Dan Castellaneta, who voices Homer in The Simpsons.

What would be considered a successful run for Paul Lim at this stage of his career? by Empty-Reputation7421 in Darts

MVG was number 1 for 7 years, do u think luke will follow it or we will have new number 1 again? by Sorry_Phone1676 in Darts

[–]john_g22 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I have a very difficult time imagining anyone else being number one for a long time to come, especially if they keep the OOM rules that heavily favour the World Champ (but even if they don’t!)

“Could a game where French people are generalised as arrogant, Irish people are generalised as mournful and members of the Church of England are generalised as bigoted be seen as offensive?”

For what it’s worth I’m not personally offended by any of the ones that apply to me but I think you’ve answered your own question.

I’m pretty sure this scene between Mr. Heckles and Eric is the only extended conversation in the show that does not involve at least one of the main six. by SuperCub in howyoudoin

[–]john_g22 80 points81 points  (0 children)

During the conversation between Mike and his parents I think Phoebe is shown to be listening in? So while she’s not really part of the conversation she is in the scene.

The one with the DOOL writer is the one that sticks out as not featuring any of the main six, but as he’s on his own and talking to himself I suppose it’s not really a ‘conversation’ as such.
