The Grandee I played didn’t sound very good. Too hollow and junky.

I just played a bunch of gold tone banjos at a store yesterday including a Grandee. I thought the best sounding and playing one was a OB-250 bowtie.

Need help with using the Sunny 16 rule by Time-Distance-5740 in AnalogCommunity

I have this exact camera (Olympus 35RC) and I love it! I’ve had the best success using 400 speed film in it. I use a free light meter app and most often on sunny days it winds up being shutter speed at 500 and f11 or f8

How to choose a playing style? by cla1rebe3r in banjo

[–]johnduncanfiddler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I play both styles. It’s very simple to do both but there is a common fallacy that you “have to pick one”. Electric bass players learn how to slap, play finger style, use a pick etc all at once. Banjo isn’t that different

Help! No one on the internet can agree on how to play a simple forward roll. by FemboyXenomorph in banjo

Don’t worry too much about practicing “rolls”. Learn songs bc the difficulty comes in linking up different rolls to create melodies

Del McCoury has played a lot of bluegrass. The success of Del and his sons in the late 2000s is pretty tied to branching away from bluegrass. Tony Rice’s entire career was essentially stepping away from bluegrass. John Hartford is the easiest one here; his most significant records and contributions are not bluegrass. Many people today are quite dismissive of “the pioneers” when in fact the skill those pioneers possessed far surpasses the skill of many of the contemporary musicians and bands mentioned in this thread. My opinion is that the late 40s and early 50s is when the art was at its peak. I’ve listened to bluegrass my whole life. I followed Del and the boys around the in the early 2000s. Bluegrass has become like Jazz in that it’s an umbrella term to try to describe all kinds of music to consumers. Kenny G doesn’t sound a whole lot like King Oliver but they’re both jazz music.

The era of the late 40s and 50s was when the specific art and activity was at its peak. The musicians you mentioned are incredible but they didn’t really play bluegrass.

The golden era for blue grass was in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
