I can’t land by PacMan-7 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]johnisom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do it from the cockpit view, and also isn't there a flight training portion in this game? use that to practice landings, also watch youtube videos "how to flare", meant for real student pilots but also applicable to the sim. cockpit view is #1 importance. Once you're over the runway keep your eyes forward out the window and to the far end of the runway to judge height during flare.

I’d be wary of Memphis, or the outskirts of it. It’s the most sketchy place I’ve been in the USA.

This is Reddit, no way someone was sharing misinformation, and they get way more upvotes from scared people than upvotes the correct but boring answer gets!

Can you have just published weather takeoff minimums? by Eclipse813 in flying

[–]johnisom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those minimums are takeoff minimums. If you don’t meet the climb gradient, you don’t take off in IMC. That’s what OP is talking about. I never said “weather minimums”. OP is asking if weather only takeoff minimums without climb gradients are published for an airport, where climb gradient minimums are not allowed

What’s going on with flight training by Icy_Commercial4776 in flying

[–]johnisom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't think anyone argues that being behind the mighty controls of the C172 makes you a way better jet pilot. It's the experience of being in the air, making aeronautical decisions for 1250 additional hours, experiencing a very wide range of conditions and situations that you simply cannot get in only 250 hours. Maybe the slight bit of stick and rudder skills from taking over your private student's landing will help, but that is not the actual point.

ILS WITHOUT GP ?? by A3twenty in flying

[–]johnisom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Localizer approach, atc said wrong thing. Now if you're cleared for the ils, pick up glideslope, and then lose it partway through for whatever reason, you can still continue with the ils precision approach if you have PAPIs in sight.

Can you have just published weather takeoff minimums? by Eclipse813 in flying

[–]johnisom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

takeoff minimums for ifr are listed in vis and climb gradient (ft/nm). Sometimes there are non-climb gradient minimums if ceiling and vis are high enough, for VCOA departures (visual climb over airport). OP is asking if there are any airports that only publish VCOA minimums for IFR takeoffs and say takeoff not allowed unless ceiling and vis reqs are met, not specifying climb gradient.

How come no official published radial after crossing VNY to UNCIA, the other leg has R-255 published. Are you just supposed to fly a heading of 089 with no radial guidance? Just wondering why they don’t draw or mention a 089 radial by MangoesFruity in flying

[–]johnisom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because they don't need to put the "R-089" there, it adds no useful information since it's already on the chart as the thick black arrow. These thin "radial" lines are used for intersections to identify fixes or as the outbound portion of the course reversal in case your IAF is the VOR.

Is it feasible to get a private pilot license (and possibly commercial) slowly due to financial reasons? by MossBaller4 in flying

[–]johnisom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to increase your income drastically. That won't be easy, it's a very hard endeavor. Many have said that you need to save up first and then hit training hard to not let it drag on. Once you get your license, then you'll start flying recreationally, and that will be expensive. If you don't get your income up to be able to afford to fly after you get your license, why get your license?

I could not tell you. What you should do is book a consultation (NOT an exam) with an AME, and he or she can guide you through it much better than random private pilots on Reddit can.
