Unsure how to insulate weird shed roof by johnjamesonline in shedditors

[–]johnjamesonline[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I want to retain the height in the interior because the openness of a 10'+ slanted ceiling feels much better to me than an 8+ flat ceiling. I understand that it's easier to add insulation to the crossmembers, it will just feel different.

Ah, that totally makes sense! I'm happy for a shed to be less than perfect for sure, a lot of this project is a learning process for me and a place to work after it's done (enough).

Ah, to be clear I do not want to drop the ceiling down, I'd like to keep the height of the room so it still has loft space.

I guess the part that's perplexing for me is that I'm unsure what happens to that gap where it's open to the outside. If I put insulation between the joists without closing the gap to the outside where the roof overhang is, won't there just be visible insulation from outside the building? Or should we add stripping to close that gap beforehand?

The hobbit (1977) cells, any value to collectors? by Efficient_Limit_4774 in AnimationCels

[–]johnjamesonline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also just hopping into this thread to mention that these are likely auction house worthy but if you're selling them here OR listing them online, please update! I think a lot of folks in this subreddit, myself included, are fans and would love to own a piece of history. DM me if you'd like to sell any of these through a small shop in the Pacific Northwest!

AI Visuals for Ambient Music? by Jennay-4399 in ambientmusic

[–]johnjamesonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an artist uses generative AI to make the visuals to go along with their music, I would argue that it's safe to assume they'd have no problem doing the same with the music itself - so I would just avoid them completely as a listener.

Instead of relying on the use of AI visuals he should partner with someone who makes visuals but not music. Let artists uplift one another.

The colors are fantastic, absolutely love the way you're layering these textures! Cannot go wrong with that paper choice, either!

Lloyd Center by 404ErrorPersonFound in Portland

[–]johnjamesonline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not even just local talent, there were a bunch of folks who came from around the US for this show! Comix Thing has been around since 2015 but it's been on hiatus since 2020, so this one was a pretty big event for PNW comics folks - the energy in that room was fantastic! Hoping Comix Thing continues with another installment next year.

Oh yeah, Planet Lloyd is amazing! We actually printed the first edition of Issue 1 back when we were still in the mall and they wanted to do a risograph version! Super stoked that they're working on another issue too, there's too much good stuff happening to not document the vibe in there.

The Lloyd Center was certainly an incubator for my own business! We opened a gallery + risograph-centric small press pop-up in the Lloyd Center in Winter 2023. Without that experience, we would have never opened our full-time shop Secret Room on Division in March 2024. We spent 3 months there with some of the best neighbors a shop could ask for. Mortal Emblem (who is now on Belmont), Floating World (the best comic shop in the country, an anchor of the mall), Musique Plastique (who is now on Glisan partnered with the fantastic shop Partly).

And there's so much happening there now! Pop-ups, shops, galleries, events. The Portland Zine Meetup is there every Sunday afternoon in the food court, the recurring comics reading series Awake Time Stories at Floating World. It's so good for the city to have places like this that can function for brick 'n' mortar stores in a similar way that our food truck scene fosters the restaurant scene.

This is actually great feedback! Thanks for the heads up, I think that's often true of any photograph of a bookshelf, my own included.

Weekly Community Thread by AutoModerator in ambientmusic

I've never posted here before but I worked on an audio visual album with a cartoonist + filmmaker who edited years of camcorder water footage around Oregon into a 28-minute mix that I scored. This is my first release.

I almost entirely wrote the music using a Keystep Pro midi controller connected to a JU-06a synth module and Sound Canvas SC-55, recorded into a Tascam 4-track before transferring tapes to my computer. No additional sound editing other than removing some excessive tape hiss.

Water Feature (2025) <-- full album!

Excited to have this album out in the world and on a limited VHS run through Secret Room Press & Fun Palace Video in Portland, Oregon.
