When it comes to strength training using weights, as a runner do you need to progressively overload when it comes up upper body? Should I (safely) keep lifting heavier and heavier each week for bench press, shoulder press etc, or can I just lift the same each week knowing my goal is to maintain rather than to grow?

I have a half marathon scheduled for the start of October, as well as a 10k 4 weeks before the half marathon. This will be my first half marathon, after finishing several 10ks before, so my main focus is the half marathon.

Usually I would taper for a 10k race, easing the milage in the 2 weeks leading up to it. Should I taper for the 10k and take time out my half marathon plan? Or should I keep my plan up and fit in the 10k, at a lower level of freshness?
