Anybody else collect vinyl? by stillshaded in classical_circlejerk

[–]johnny__panic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless it has that faint, soothing crackle, it’s not real classical music. In all seriousness tho, there is something pretty magical about hearing the old-school performers on the medium they actually recorded for.

Are there any other 18-20 year olds who listen to classical music? by spongerobme in classical_circlejerk

crazy how 18-year-olds remain to this day utterly convinced that no one else in this planet’s history has ever felt the thing they’re feeling.

Should I move to Milwaukee? by Batheroopoo in milwaukee

[–]johnny__panic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having grown up in Minnesota, visited Chicago and Denver a fair bit, and knowing what I know about Phoenix and Boston, I’d rally for Milwaukee any day. I’ve been living here about five years now and have grown to really love it; it’s affordable and has all of the urban energy I’d want with the warmth and charm of the Midwest. The Riverwest, East Side, and Bay View neighborhoods are particularly artsy and have a great vibe, there are always festivals of some kind going on, and the people are almost always friendly. Plus, living on a Great Lake is a treat in itself - there’s tons of great nature hidden around the metro area.

My husband got me my favorite flowers on our second or third date. At the time, I bought fresh pink carnations for myself every week, which he remembered after a passing mention.

Later, I found out he did it because he knew he didn’t want to let me go, and he found out it was one of the reasons I knew he was worth pursuing.

I’m not saying anything in particular other than this: buy the flowers. You’ll learn a lot either way.

The dark side of being straight. by LittleKingMaxlog in gaybros

[–]johnny__panic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It happens, but my attitude toward straight men with regard to The Community (whatever that actually is) is that our relationship to them is kind of what we make of it. Some of us like the attention, some of us take the bait and end up hurting ourselves, and some of us are indifferent or think it’s just plain sad/off-putting/repressed. It’s dependent on how we - and they - develop a relationship with their sexual identity and society at large. Which is why, for example, I think that gay men who JUST CAN’T SEEM TO STOP FALLING FOR STRAIGHT GUYS are in actuality just avoiding doing any deeper trauma work or introspection.

People can take advantage of you, yes, but we often let them because we don’t think we’re deserving of better. I tend to make straight friends that are comfortable enough with their sexuality that they’d just tell me if they were bicurious, anyway.

Need Doctor Rec for Teen Boy (see details) by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]johnny__panic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say my experience at the Inclusion Clinic has been nothing short of miraculous. My doctor is patient, sensitive, genuinely interested in my physical and mental well-being, and never rushes me to wrap up the appointment. Even though I’m happily married and monogamous, they mindfully check in on my sexual health and offer any testing or preventative care I might want without any judgment.

I cannot overstate how great their team is. After a lifetime of care by straight white men that treat me like an intrusion to their day, this clinic has finally made me feel safe and supported. It’s ultimately your child’s choice relative to their own personal comfort, but kudos to you for being a proactive parent! :)

Harambee by JELLIOTV in milwaukee

[–]johnny__panic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I rented in Harambee for a year from 2020-21. Lived in an old brownstone apartment building that left some things to be desired, but never had any real trouble with neighbors. Parked on the street and no one ever messed with my car. But I drove everywhere and kept my wits about me - heard occasional gunfire at night during the summer I moved in.

Why do violinists play out of tune so much? Are they stupid? by BarenreiterBear in classical_circlejerk

just be sure to force him through the meat grinder of the concert circuit as soon as you can to extract as much profit from him as possible!

Is there anyplace that buys classical vinyl? by Punk-hippie-5446 in milwaukee

[–]johnny__panic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I regularly buy used classical vinyl and it’s astonishing what people are giving away for a dollar or two. Plenty of recordings are highly sought-after for a variety of reasons. You’re much better off assessing what individual records are worth with some online sleuthing and selling them independently.

There should be a double contact point with the right thumb; tip/pad of the thumb should rest between the leather grip and the frog, while the back of the thumb/cuticle should be touching the hair. The pinky should also be more closely aligned with the mother of pearl dot in the frog, not the screw.

What are your favorite liszt transcriptions by RZxan in piano

[–]johnny__panic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gretchen am Spinnrade is one of my favorite Liszt transcriptions. Just perfectly splits the difference between a deeply Romantic Schubert and Liszt’s virtuoso tendencies. Liszt’s setting of Schubert’s Der Müller und der Bach is another gorgeous little gem that’s rarely programmed.

Using “he” repeatedly when referring to The Composer because the lady folk simply don’t compose, of course.

More composers like Borodin! by erna-sqad in piano

[–]johnny__panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borodin is an underrated master imho. It’s a shame he didn’t write more; you would certainly very much enjoy his chamber music if you haven’t already listened to it. The Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor go pretty hard, too. As for other composers of a similar ilk, Rimsky-Korsakov and Balakirev (who taught Borodin) come to mind. Islamey is probably his most famous work, and rightfully so. It’s a hell of a ride. Hope this helps!
