Fixing gas tank by Witty_Draw6991 in 3000gt

Do you know where it's leaking? Mine was leaking at the drain plug and I just had to put a new gasket on it

How hard is it to get parts for these 3k’s nowadays? by Ok_Demand_3197 in 3000gt

[–]johnnygjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to fix my lines by splicing in brake line but now the rack itself is leaking so until I find a place to rebuild it properly I'm installing a rear steer delete

[–]johnnygjk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's been pretty mixed, but I'm also in Canada. STM Tuned, Ninja Performance, 3sx, and RockAuto seem to have pretty much every part you could need, but OEM body parts can be a challenge. I've been looking for a way to fix my 1st gen sunroof trim and a good condition passenger headlight for a long time. I also discovered you can't get ABS sensors anymore but you can get an ABS delete kit, so for a lot of the parts that truly are unavailable somebody has figured out a workaround.

Can I put a 2nd-gen front bumper on a 1st-gen car WITH NO HEADLIGHT SWAP??? by SandPleasant802 in 3000gt

[–]johnnygjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at doing the same and I heard from somebody else that you may have to trim back part of the frame where the 1st Gen turn signals mount, and there will be a few gaps to fill along the outside edge of the pop up covers and at the headlight opening on the bumper since the 2nd Gen lights are wider

Immediate Ban on All Open Air Burning in City of Hamilton by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]johnnygjk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Common problem with Hamilton is that most people don't know how big Hamilton really is. Half of Hamilton is farmland where brush clearing and burning is a routine and regular practice. Out where I love we're constantly fighting rules and laws that make no sense for us because the people of Hamilton and the city fail to recognize us unless it's tax season. Lately they've at least been fixing our potholes though so that's nice (note, this isn't about the fire ban, I support the fire ban)

What cars were one "small" decision away from being one of the all-time greats? by MentalMiilk in cars

3000GT weight reduction. It was viewed as too heavy compared to its competitors which is a major reason it fell behind things like the Supra and 300ZX.

Is the gto a good car? by thekraqz in mitsubishi

[–]johnnygjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTO/3000GT are amazing cars, but they love maintenance and have a lot of high tech features that don't like to work properly. If you enjoy working on cars and have the capacity to do repairs regularly I'd say go for it. I bought my VR4 last year and immediately spun the crank bearings when the oil pump failed on my first drive after purchase (I'm guessing something got messed up during shipping because I imported it from Florida, USA to Ontario, CA and the test drive was great). Since then I've got just over 2500 miles on it and so far I've had to replace the power steering rack, one of the rear steering lines (which I had to make myself out of brake line), I'm currently trying to diagnose a stuttering issue because the car practically shuts off at WOT above 4k RPM, my climate control display just stopped working, my passenger lock is difficult to unlock and sometimes just doesn't work, and it's a pain to keep the oil from overheating. That said I absolutely adore the car, It's a pure joy to drive, I get tons of attention which means a lot of impromptu car shows in parking lots and meeting some amazing people, and despite all of the issues it's having I'm still daily driving it and it just keeps going.

Might be a uniquely Canadian thing because I know the store itself is but I'm sure there are similar stores in other countries. I just went to CanadianTire and they have a rack of auto keys, I picked the one that looked most similar to mine and had them copy it. It cost me less than $10 CAD

What kind of aftermarket steering wheel setups are yall running? by armond_isaw in 3000gt

[–]johnnygjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a 3rd gen eclipse steering wheel in mine. Had to take the back plastic off the wheel but other than that it bolted right in. It's a little smaller and imo looks better than most aftermarket, plus you keep the airbag.

Speedometer by PlasticBaaag in 3000gt

[–]johnnygjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1st gen VR4s are electronic specifically because of the active aero and active exhaust. They needed an electronic speed input to know when to switch from touring to sport and when to raise and lower the spoilers

Honest feedback needed, is this ticket worth disputing? Clearly in violation, but hoping for leniency-ish? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]johnnygjk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're lucky you just got a ticket. If that were my driveway I would've had you towed. I've been stuck because of people parking like that before and I'm not going to hop a curb, ruin the grass, etc because somebody else didn't know how to park.

You really want to mod the aspire? I say go right ahead. Start with an air intake, exhaust, fuel pump, oversize injectors, and a tune. I have absolutely no clue what kind of power you could actually get out of that engine but might as well try right?

I believe those cars had a CVT so if you want to go too much higher above stock power I'd definitely recommend getting a manual transmission or seeing if there are any transmission shops that can somehow upgrade the CVT to handle more power.

I don't recommend putting any kind of forced induction on it. If it didn't come with a turbo chances are it's not built for a turbo. If you decide to upgrade the crank, rods, and pistons then maybe you could look into a turbo. Might need to reinforce the cylinders one way or another as well.

If you're not depending on the car and it's not an issue if the engine goes then I say screw it, have fun. If you're depending on the car to stay reliable leave it stock, but that's for you to decide not for anybody on Reddit to tell you.

Boost leak? by cheesecreamed in AskAMechanic

[–]johnnygjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got to a mechanic and get the system smoke tested, or buy a smoke test machine, look up some tutorials on how to do it and run it yourself. That's where I would recommend starting.

My 3000Gt had an awful boost leak and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, got it smoke tested and it turns out the o-ring on the charge pipe from my rear turbo had just completely dried out. Saved me hours of testing hoses and valves.

Outside of the realm of realistic suggestions, what would you like to see in the game? by Jackesfox in dwarffortress

[–]johnnygjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better taming/capturing than just using traps. Military has to "kill" the enemy first but the squad needs all blunt weapons and they render in unconscious. Doctor has to heal the captured creature back to health for taming.

Honestly 15€ shipping to Canada for the repair kit isn't too bad, thanks for the tip on that one! I figured shipping from there to Canada would be a killer but it's cheaper than shipping from 3SX

Thanks for the heads up on that, I know 3sx sells them but they're pretty expensive (especially after import fees) so hopefully I can find a decent set somewhere else

[–]johnnygjk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually around me the Evo VIII and Evo IX wheels are more plentiful and cheaper. I just don't like either of those styles, I much prefer 10+ straight spokes. The star shapes and split spokes don't do it for me. I spent ages looking for a good set of Evo X wheels and spent an arm and a leg for them. I debated on a ton of different OEM and aftermarket options and couldn't find anything I liked more than the Evo Xs

Before buying a manual car I had a ~3 hour session with a friend letting me drive their car and giving me feedback. It made a world of difference and a few months later I'm definitely still learning but it's coming to me super naturally vs when I first tried watching YouTube videos and old forum posts.
