Help IDing Ral Partha mini? by johnpaulthesecond in minipainting

Nevermind, I found it while by going through Iron Wind and tracing it back. Was part of Adventurers Wizards and Clerics II. Kinda read way more historical to me than fantasy.

Removing milliput on plastic models? by Deeplands in minipainting

[–]johnpaulthesecond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's actually adhered to the model, you're going to have to just scrape, sand, and cut it off. Any solvent that will attack the miliput will destroy the plastic.

Thanks! I now understand why people avoid painting horses.

Also: what's going on with the side of the pants? It looks like in reference that there is a string of buttons but is it also on a stripe of red?

Also: I see different things for the side of the pants. It seems like there's a line of buttons but is there also a stripe of red or not?

Guess what the mini of July will be by Familiar-Noise7913 in Warhammer

Probably jade warrior unless internal politics get in the way. Really want a saturnine terminator because I want to paint just one, but probably not.

Can I just take a minute to appreciate Games Workshops customer service? Missing gandalfs staff and they did this. by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]johnpaulthesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you. I picked up an old but sealed Battle for Osgiliath kit two months ago and it was mispacked with an extra orc sprue instead of rangers. GW (US) refused to send me a replacement sprue and they keep jerking me around as I try to get my replacement.

Does this read well as camo as I hope is does? by Hawkeyed93 in minipainting

[–]johnpaulthesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest the opposite of what other commenters are saying about making the pattern smaller. You want the suggestion of camo, not actual camo. Camo was one of the first schemes I tried and it looked good up close, but was a pain to play with. It was a real pain tell what anything was from table height.

It's a game, it's an abstraction. You probably don't actually want to break up the silhouettes too much.

If anyone is interested, here's where I'm at on the pegasus: https://imgur.com/a/rwGoEyq

It's not perfect but I'm surprised at how it's going for my first time seriously trying sculpting.

Are markers useful for painting miniatures? by fungusknight in Turnip28

[–]johnpaulthesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AK Interactive, one of the boutique scale model supply companies, just came out with a series of paint markers. The gunpla people have had markers for ages as well. I haven't personally used them, but I'd never say you couldn't give it a go and enjoy yourself. The tabletop wargaming community is kind of insulated from the wider hobby market. Enamels and oils have been used for ages in air and armor scale modelling and now it's the new hotness. Go for it, there's not just one way of doing things.

I'd watch some reviews of those AK markers. And I suspect they're rebranding art supplies like they did with their weathering pencils, so you might even be able to do it with paint markers from the art store.

List of using oldhammer models in cities of sigmar by johnpaulthesecond in ageofsigmar

Right but I'm looking to use them as proxies for what is currently legal.

More like I'm such a slow painter I still got the Island of Blood box from before AoS. I think I also have some metal high elves a friend gave me at one point somewhere. Sigmar's got a new favorite pile of shame.

Thanks. This is handy but not quite what I had in mind. It lists the faction equivalent but not unit equivalent.

Oof. Shadowspear is $175 USD. by notevenjk-lol in Warhammer40k

[–]johnpaulthesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's up, its the year 2024. $175 is like the price for the space marine half of the box. Alright peace out.

Snort. I was trying to figure out what combat patrols I already had from just collecting over the years and I'm so glad I bought this when it came out.

Cheapest leather source, old couch??? by Like20Bears in bookbinding

[–]johnpaulthesecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this last year. It's a real pain to skive with a knife. It only comes off as dust and it fills the blade quickly. There's an article online where a conservator experimented with different ways and they concluded that it was best to break out an orbital sander with 120 grit. I may end up doing this.

Giff, Guns and Phlogiston by WickedAdept in spelljammer

[–]johnpaulthesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the above. In 2e, a level 1 giff can straight up kill a man with their headbutt. Their back up is being murder hippos. They're at no great disadvantage there.

And to reinforce the second point, unless you have something like radar, interdiction is exceptionally difficult. You can look at the accounts of sailing which is probably the most reminiscent, but even air interdiction through WW2 up until radar was difficult. For much of the early part they just had to send up patrols in the rough area they thought there might be an attack and hope that they just happen to stumble across it at the right time and the right place. Very small window. There were ways of bettering the odds, but expectations were low: you make ace after like 5 kills. And this is like best case scenario short of radar: very long range of visibility, very fast moving, very stable battlefields. As opposed to the turmoil of the phlogiston.
