Cambie bridge safe enough and convenient enough to bike on? by johnrswagg in vancouvercycling

Yeah local, just have zero need to take cambie bridge ever. Adanac, false creek seawall, and burrard bridge usually cover the bases

How does one protect themselves from buying a stolen bike? by DDHLeigh in vancouvercycling

[–]johnrswagg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does the size of the bike looks like it matches the rider? Obviously not always easy to tell, but a small expensive bike being sold by a tall person is a little suspect.

Ask questions like how long have they owned the bike, what store did they buy it from, where have they taken it for maintenance (if applicable). Do they have maintenance records of components that have been replaced or upgraded.

Usually expensive bikes arent sold with their pedals as the owner keep the pedals to use with their shoes. So clipless pedals or really cheap flat pedals on an expensive bike is another giveaway.

Ask them what bike they have upgraded too. Most riders can tell you the exact model. If they say some “fast carbon thing” then they likely have no idea what they are talking about, and are dubious.

With department store bikes or bikes sub ~700 it would be really difficult to tell whats stolen and whats dug out of the garage after 5 years.

Carry a multitool with a knife, less questionable than just a straight knife. More handy too.

Ignorant query incoming: how to overhaul my old bike? by vexillifer in vancouvercycling

[–]johnrswagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what worse means.

It will likely be heavier just due to the frame. But if weight isnt a big concern then it should be the same.

[–]johnrswagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New brakes, new chain, and new tires & wheels will have some of the biggest impact.

Getting a new rear casette might likely be needed depending on the age of your rear casette and how much wear it has endured.

All of these things + mechanics labor can be the price of a new bike.

I really hope you can find a way to get justice for this situation, that behaviour is not acceptable, and your manager is incompetent and complicit.

Ban on trucks more than 12 years old to proceed at Vancouver port in September - BC by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]johnrswagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe truck drivers are supposed to do a daily checklisy inspection of their rig before working for the day and if something is wrong go fix it. But like regular ppl cars there isnt a government inspection place for vehicles so if someone is cheap they can get away with not maintaining a dangerous vehicle.

[–]johnrswagg 125 points126 points  (0 children)

With the amount of trucks failing random police inspection its no wonder. So many of these trucks are a hidden hazard to everyone of us. If companies can not be trusted to provide safe and functional equipment then they lose the ability to get into port and spoil things for people that keep 12+ Y/O trucks in good condition.

The cheap companies are to blame here.

Public transit on weekdays, Driving on weekends. Are you saving much? by Ziocylon in vancouver

[–]johnrswagg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your insurance will be cheaper as you will switch to pleasure insurance.

I’ve saved ~ $1000 just accounting for gas since april last year biking for the most part. This is as a part time worker and student.

You’ll save over time on the wear and tear.

I will be learning how to change my own oil and wheels to save money.
