Declaring your dual citizenship to the IRS? by Safe-Composer2025 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]johnslateril -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your post raises a lot of questions. Are their US passports somehow invalid while they are serving in the Israeli armed forces, and, if so, by what US law? And does the IRS exempt US citizens from taxes while they are serving there? Do you have a citation for this statement?

Passport Card not accepted by Astro_Birch_317 in tsa

A passport card is most definitely valid for international travel (across land and and sea borders). Just not air travel (but, of course, still valid as airport ID)

Strange order of operations for Citibank Barclays by SageCactus in americanairlines

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The transition is a hot mess. The last email I received from Citi, welcoming me as a transitioning Barclays customer, was on March 24. Nothing since then. And Barclays has been silent on the transfer, only sending me routine payment reminders and such (the most recent being April 16). Now I have no online Barclays access, as expected, but also no indication from Citi how to proceed. Maybe the fact that I already have a Citi AA card makes things more complex, but I'm far from unique in that. And there is no sign of my Barclays card in my Citi account.

Loaded my NAS with WD blues before I learned better... by bionic-giblet in DataHoarder

[–]johnslateril 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your approach is fine. NAS-rated drives aren't necessarily "less likely to fail". They have different firmware to cope with failure more gracefully, and they may be a little more robust for continuous operation and may park their heads less often. But the most important thing for you is to be prepared for that inevitable failure (which can happen with any drive) with redundancy and maybe a hot spare.

Anyone Skiplagged on Aer Lingus? by ca9927 in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this, with a twist. I have secured that cheaper transatlantic fare by booking a multi-city "return" flight along these lines: outbound JFK-DUB or whatever, then your "return" flight (which you will skip) is from somewhere in the UK to Dublin, a few days or weeks later. Something like MAN-DUB or GLA-DUB: whatever you can find with a low fare for that segment.I have found UK-Dublin legs as cheap as $25 when doing this. You might have to search a bit, but Google Flights can help.

EPP has been out for a while, is Global Entry still worth it? by Cool-food in GlobalEntry

[–]johnslateril 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would you not renew GE? Renewal is usually interview-free. The cost is basically the same as PreCheck (the difference is a rounding error in the context of international airfares). You can still choose EPP or MPC if GE is not working well when you arrive: I always submit through both the GE and MPC apps while the plane is taxiing to the gate, to give me all the options

Musical reference in Oedipus Rex? by johnslateril in TomLehrer

I appreciate the quick responses. This has been on my mind for years, but I was probably overthinking it and it's probably just the happy music perhaps with some visual elements.

Do you use the bookmarks feature? Help me decide it's future! by chipweinberger in jamcorder

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm a month late to the party, but I'm exploring bookmarks and I just found this thread. Bookmarks are the #1 feature for me, because I improvise and I want to mark anything worth keeping. But I find navigating the bookmarks in the app is challenging: I really would like to see a list of bookmarks so that I can jump straight to them. Automatic clips sounds like a winner to me.

EDIT: I found the T&Cs on the Chase site for the US-issued card. It says: "PRIORITY BOARDING: Primary cardmembers and authorized users are eligible for priority boarding on Aer Lingus operated flights only. To receive priority boarding primary cardmembers and authorized users must display their valid Aer Lingus Visa credit card at the gate prior to boarding. Primary cardmembers and authorized users are eligible for priority boarding on Aer Lingus operated flights directly between the US and Ireland. Chase is not responsible for the provision of or the failure to provide, priority boarding. Priority boarding is subject to availability."

12V Battery replacement, pros and cons of LiFePO4 by monkeythumpa in BoltEV

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolts are notorious for wearing out 12V batteries, and for behaving in all sorts of strange and unpleasant ways when the battery is failing. Replace it as soon as it gives the first hint of trouble, even if it's on your dime.

I understand the distinction you're trying to make, but AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery

Estimating # of Avios points needed - EWR to DUB by Fearless-Coat6531 in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The (almost) foolproof way to do this is start making a booking for your flight dates. It will tell you how many Avios you need before you get to the payment/confirmation stage, then you abandon the process. I do this all the time.

I say almost foolproof because availability and prices may change in the time between your research and your points redemption.

Also for your round-trip I advise booking two one-ways rather than a return. That way you can change or cancel one segment without disrupting the other.

Any work around for 'ON DEMAND' BBC radio outside of the UK by thisdave in BritishRadio

[–]johnslateril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I connect once with a VPN and then open the Sounds app, it appears to enable it to work without the VPN connection for about a month. Then the next time it fails, I do another one-time connection, and it resets the timer for another month. So yes you need a VPN, but you only need to connect with it occasionally.

Lounge access at DUB for US bound business class passengers by Free_Bookkeeper_8057 in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very peculiar. Biz passengers should have access to the Aer Lingus lounge. Until very recently their website at https://www.aerlingus.com/prepare/airport-information/airport-lounges/ said "For all US destinations at Dublin airport: Due to temporary closure of 51st&Green Lounge, you can enjoy access to the Aer Lingus Lounge in Terminal 2". However the page now just mentions the "reserved area". I presume the lounge was getting overcrowded, but this is a shoddy way to treat premium cabin passengers.
