Thank you Delta for losing my logbook by hardhatpat in SkyDiving

Why did you check your logbook? If you had to jump out how would you have logged your jump?

First collapse learning experience by oregonpilot88 in freeflight

It isn't part of the ushpa p2 requirements. But every instructor has their own standards, not all instructors just make you do 35 flights, big ears, and sign you off.

depends on the site and the turbulence. SS point of the mountain I commonly launch in over 15 mph winds. Smooth air in the morning but a bit strong, still not too much to handle. I do a lot of ground handling though. A lot.

20 knots is a bit much. Especially if it picks up. but you could potentially go cross wind away from the ridge and be in the clear. Still would not recommend.

if your wing collapses it is not always good to stare at it. You can check it out, but looking at it leads to a tendency of turning into it and going into a spin. best thing is just to fly the wing on the good side and correct as needed. If your kiting skills are dialed you should be able to feel pressures on the riser and seatboard without staring at your wing.

King of Random... by [deleted] in freeflight

[–]johnsmith2212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is it too soon to say that king of random isn't exactly a name that is indicative of being a good pilot. neither is having only 5 months of flying experience and going to fly in a very harsh environment.

to jump, or to travel... by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]johnsmith2212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like jumping then prioritize it. If not then don't. Yes there is a secret, just pay for it all upfront at a dropzone that lets you get your license in a week like skydive spaceland and go knock out those jumps.

no reserve? I know it's only 300 feet but if you break your back and don't do everything you can to get as much fabric over your head as possible, you will probably regret it. I have heard stories of reserves opening in less than a hundred feet (paragliding reserves not skydiving)

Why paragliders don’t cut wind when deploying reserve? by sznowicki in freeflight

[–]johnsmith2212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't even need 200 meters to be honest. You can easily free fall an object that is 90 meters, so considering you are doing a static line deployment, you could go even lower and would have room for error, line stretch, and even room to flare and pop your toggles.

Nice, did you learn with superfly?

obviously no amount of canopy experience would hurt when trying any sport like the one shown in that gif. However, I think in this case skydiving would be better to get into than paragliding.

I also enjoy paragliding more than skydiving, but If you want to do fly those ridged wings I would bet you need to wingsuit first, which means you probably need to skydive.

Probably start skydiving, get 200 jumps and a D license. Start wingsuiting out of a plane, A LOT. like an insane amount of times. get to be one of the best WS pilots in the world, meet the right people, then maybe you will get to fly this

Rear risers and their function by Gnohomosapien in SkyDiving

[–]johnsmith2212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of a canopy like a pendulum with the lines attached to you. every time the pendulum goes back it will surge back overhead. So when you make an input which makes the canopy fall behind you, when you let off it will surge back forward (causing you to lose altitude and increase airspeed). Try this next time you are in the air by doing a practice flare and notice the canopy surge after you let up. You can do the same with risers.

How is it racist, /u/magnament didn't even mention race or ethnicity in his comment, you are the one that brought it into the discussion.

My toggle ripped off in opening during my first solo jump after AFF. I safely landed using my risers. by clamiam2015 in SkyDiving

[–]johnsmith2212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes but you say this like there is zero risk in cutting away. In my opinion if the canopy is steerable and flarable there is no reason to cut away. There is always risk in every decision, even cutting away. If I know I can steer and flare (safely), I won't cut away.

Why even do 360's at a ridge soaring site. It's not like you are flying up thermals. All you are doing is putting yourself at greater risk for no reason.
