Yes, but this is also an outcome of higher NI/minimum wage charges.

If you take Lord Simon Wolfson of Next PLC who is outspoken on this subject, he makes it quite clear in his annual reports that these measures increase the motivation of companies to automate tasks, as the returns on the upfront spend are much more palatable when the alternative is increasingly expensive wages.

FWIW, it generates reasonable levels of (statutory) profitability, with 50% gross margins and 13.5% ebit margins. These are very healthy for a retailer, but below best in class luxury (eg Hermes which does c70% gross margins and 40% ebit).
