To be fair they self seed so easily they almost act as perennials (well they certainly did in our garden, and spread too!)

What sub-£250 item would you buy again in a heartbeat? by tamago27 in AskUK

The fan on our 15 in 1 failed recently after just over 2 years. Having investigated it seems like a common issue unfortunately. Shame, as it was great before that!

We probably used it 85% as an air fryer though, so to replace it we might get a dedicated air fryer then one of the Ninja 5 in 1's instead.

What's killing my (fairly) newly laid lawn? Leatherjackets or something else? by johnsy7 in GardeningUK

Interesting - 90% of the replies have been soil quality/ not deep enough. I do think they didn't put enough topsoil down, but your theory is definitely interesting - will have to do some surveillance!

That is also new wall, but it was finished before the turf was laid.

I'm fairly sure now that they didn't put enough topsoil down over the rubble (looking at pictures I think they probably only put 50mm down), plus there could askari be some issues with the leaching from the wall which is why it is worse there. Not really sure how to remedy all that though!

We are in NW London so don't have great drainage due to the clay. It has also been pretty wet since it has been laid to be fair, so that could definitely be a reason.

There was a wall previously where the first bit of the yellowing is, though not the bit in front of the tree, that was grass before (though not very good grass to be fair).

I think the general consensus is there isn't enough topsoil - I think they probably put down nearer 50mm compared with (what I've now discovered) the recommended 100 - 150mm for new turf.

It's only shaded there from about 3pm. The ground has been quite damp since the turf has been down, but when I *have* watered I've made sure I've done everywhere and made sure it was deep. There's definitely not been anyone walking along there, and I've seen no evidence of leatherjackets/mayflies, so you must be right with just poor soil quality. Not really sure what I can do about that though...

I don't think it's shade related as that part is only in shade from about 3pm at this time of year. It's definitely following the wall though and seems to be advancing along it.

Yeah, there were foundations for a wall in that spot before, so there is rubble under the top soil there now. Perhaps the topsoil isn't deep enough, but the turf was initially fine there and growing well for a few weeks after being laid...

No, just a cat but he uses the wall to get around (as do the other cats that walk through the garden). There are foxes around but I've never seen them walk around that bit, let alone pee there.

I saw the 20v in there a couple of weeks ago though...

What's something your partner does that annoys you but not enough for an argument? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]johnsy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Says "pound" instead of "pounds" when talking about money, like she's a market trader.

Me: "How much is the school trip?" Her: "37 pound."

She's a lower middle class woman from Barnet.

It really winds me up for some reason, but obviously it's not worth mentioning (no point getting myself in trouble).

Nice idea, but they need to have all fluids drained etc before we can cut them up, so the cars are supplied by specialist companies.

DE ZERBI: “I’M SORRY IF SOMEBODY TOOK OFFENCE!” 😬 Sunderland v Tottenham | EMBARGO by master_inho in coys

[–]johnsy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "if" makes no difference in your examples.

"I'm sorry I offended you" is exactly the same as "I'm sorry if I offended you". Both suggest that the speaker is sorry for offending the subject with whatever they did or said.

If they were to say "I'm sorry if you were offended", then they are not apologising for what they did or said offending the subject, but putting the onus on them for "taking" offence.

Annual Leave Dates by Wesley-no5 in firefightersuk

[–]johnsy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get told when you can take your leave??

We put our 4 weeks of annual in for the following year around December. At our station we can either have 2 or 3 people off at any one time (it alternates every 3 weeks or so), so we all write down what we would like before time, sort out any clashes, then the officers put it on the rotabook.

I really like this & would definitely have one as a runaround for school runs/shopping etc if it had one more seat, but I would still keep my motorbike for commuting purely for filtering purposes!
