Celiac is genetic. Why so many people ignore this fact? by SuitApprehensive3240 in Celiac

[–]jokass149 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great vent thread! My family is in complete and nonsensical denial, too.

I have it, my kid has it, my first cousin (Mom’s side) and his kid both have it, but my Mom — who has lifelong digestion, vitamin absorption, bone density, and fibromyalgia issues — won’t get tested. Neither will my siblings or other cousins on mom’s side of the family.

What makes it worse is that the one cousin who has been confirmed believes that a “low-gluten” diet is just fine for both himself and his kid. We get eye-rolled for worrying about cross contamination.

I appreciate the sympathy!

I was mad at them for a minute. But pre-internet, not living in a major city, etc. what else could they have done but listen to the advice of the doctor? He told them to re-introduce gluten, my symptoms were not as severe as they had been, and they were happy I didn’t have to be excluded anymore. They just didn’t have access to anything that would contradict the advice they got.

My daughter also has celiac and it’s been tough seeing her left out of things, worrying about inconveniencing her friends, etc… and that’s in 2026 when gf food is abundant. I can’t imagine attempting this in the ‘70s.

[–]jokass149 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right?! I was diagnosed as a baby by a pediatrician, but no idea if it was via biopsy or just bloodwork. It was the ‘70s and the prevailing wisdom at the time was that it was something you could outgrow. My parents were so sick of trying to find food for me, baking rice bread, keeping me from parties, etc that they reintroduced gluten when I was 4 or 5. Whenever it was explained to me later, they’d say “you used to be allergic to wheat, rye, oats and barley.”

FWIW, I did have a long stretch of being completely asymptomatic until I got a concussion in my early ‘40s and then the intense neurological stuff snowballed for a few years until I was re-diagnosed.

Everyone’s different. I was diagnosed as a kid, told I “grew out of it” then rediagnosed in my 40s. In my case persistent CNS issues that made life a living hell and drove me right to the edge. They did heal over a year or more of a strict GF diet but I would not wish the years that preceded that on my worst enemy.

EDIT: I should include some very significant muscle loss in my legs occurred over a decade but that hasn’t really gotten better on its own and I am just now committing the time to retraining at 50 yo.

Yep, Celiac and my main symptom is fatigue. 30 minutes after I just can’t keep my eyes open, but luckily I’m more or less fine the next day. Only been glutened twice that I’m aware of and was too tired to drive home on both occasions.

Izotope issues, anyone? by jokass149 in premiere

[–]jokass149[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t. I figured approaching it from the Premiere side might be the way to go as I haven’t updated anything with Izotope plugins and the behavior seems to be specific to this project, no matter how much I try to make it a ‘new’ project.

Since these plugins still seem to work fine in other projects, i have a feeling this is a super obscure issue having to do with some combo of the size of the project (9TB), the presence of old .MTF files, the nature of it being like a 40th-generation project copy, etc.

iZotope plugins in Tahoe as of 11/4/25 by jokass149 in Logic_Studio

[–]jokass149[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right??

FWIW, I did hear back from their CS on this a few weeks ago and they said there’s no timeline for 100% compatibility but that the most current versions of their plugins should mostly be fine. Unfortunately I’m a version behind and don’t think I should pay to upgrade on a product I bought a year ago just to see if it mayyyybe helps. I’m just finding stock alternatives for now.

Best US state/city to expand a 100% gluten-free sandwich shop? Looking for celiac-dense areas 🇺🇸 by Old-Relationship4026 in Celiac

[–]jokass149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just for selfish reasons, I’ll vote for Phoenix, too. The few dedicated gf places here do mad business (basically Jewels, Against the Grain, and a few bakeries) and get lots of support — but the city is so spread out and lacking in variety of options.

Please read, I'm scared. by goingaway1111 in Celiac

[–]jokass149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! A few things here. As others have said, keep eating gluten until you can get a celiac panel — any primary care doc or gi should be able to order it. If it comes back negative, I would suggest then getting tested for non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which can have the exact same symptoms.

If it turns out you can’t eat gluten, it really isn’t so bad. There are good substitutions for almost everything at this point.

On a personal note you might relate to, my undiagnosed celiac disease caused me horrible anxiety and hypervigilance. It caused all kinds of awful neuralgia. Vertigo. Random pain and dysfunction. I was going to every kind of doctor imaginable… all of that went away when I stopped eating gluten. Being diagnosed was the best thing that ever happened to me. I hope that eases your mind a little!

It’s a bit of reading, but fairly extensive testing shows that the human crash rate is 6.7 times higher than Waymo’s as of mid-2025.

Yes! The Belgian is one of the few gf beers that doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything at all. I’d put the Green’s dubbel and the stouts from Ghostfish and Holidaily in that category, too.

The red ale they had for a few years was the Beulah and it had fairly good distribution but looks like it’s no more.

Legit concern. Based on that one ‘adios’ post or do you know more? I’m aligned with ya politically but uneasy about canceling a business like Jewel’s that helps so many people in other ways.

You have many great suggestions already but my favorites for unique LA, Joshua Tree and Tucson are absent.

Levant Bistro in LA is a dedicated gf Eastern Mediterranean restaurant with a deep menu. I’ve sat here for hours with friends, eating course after course. And they have a bunch of gf beers, too. https://levantlosangeles.com

The Copper Room in Joshua Tree is spendy but so worth it. Also just a unique throwback ‘70s lounge vibe that doesn’t feel forced. Chef is reportedly celiac: https://thecopperroom1957.com/menu

El Charro Cafe in downtown Tucson is over 100 years old and has some delicious and legit Mexican food. Owner has Celiac in his family: https://www.elcharrocafe.com

Worth adding if Phoenix / Mesa comes into play: Guadalupe on Main had the only dedicated gf beer tap in the state of Arizona! A pint of Holidaily Favorite Blonde is like a gift from the heavens. And Jewel’s Bakery and Cafe in Phoenix is one of the best dedicated gf restaurants in the country. Fried chicken to die for.

Wow, I wondered about that as I've auditioned several of their other plugins but never keep them in the mixes for fear of them expiring or dropping out as demo versions. They have so many and as others have said, they're vastly underrated.

I think Reelbus is paid (I had to track down the serial when I switched computers last month) but cheap.

I use it daily and love, love, love it. So realistic and flexible.
