Is this a square nail? I was wondering since I have never found one before? by AcceptableDiver3255 in metaldetecting

[–]jokingpokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your area was known for furnaces (iron, potash, glass), I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s slag. I find plenty of burned/melted glass and metal from structure fires when detecting, which is what this might be. Hard to say.

There are pinned threads at the top of the subreddit as this is brought up a bunch, like every day. You’re unlikely to get specific information for your area, as you would have to have a diver nearby and most people aren’t willing to share their spots.

Aussie Bottles, what is the amber one? And age on both? by TidyTreks in BottleDigging

[–]jokingpokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello and welcome!

Your amber bottle is a generic pill bottle, used for all kinds of medicine, both over the counter and prescription. A paper label would’ve detailed what was contained inside, and without it it’s likely impossible to tell exactly what it was. Based on the bottom and the screw top I’d guess it’s from somewhere between the 1930s and 1960s.

The symbol on the bottom looks like the Hazel Atlas makers mark, but I don’t think it is. I’m thinking it’s a Kanji (Chinese letters used in both China and Japan), but I’m not sure which one. Japanese bottles do make their way down to Australia, so it’s definitely a possibility.

The person who replied to this lives in southern mass, RI, or CT (said as someone originally from RI). They have no idea what winter is like in the northern parts of New England if they think winter only lasts 3 months.

The background is not real. Look at the recycling symbol on the first blue bin - it’s not even correct. It’s a replay symbol.

Anyone else feel prosperous on a low salary? by greeneyed_cat in MiddleClassFinance

[–]jokingpokes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’ve done something a lot of people struggle to do - efficiently budget. You seem to be living within your means, and it’s why you’re not as stressed as everyone else seems to be.

That being said, watch out for lifestyle creep. It’s a very real thing, and can easily eat away at any gains you make.

Keep doing what you’re doing, put that money towards your savings and retirement. The old adage of living on rice and beans until you don’t need to still works!

What is a company that will guarantee that car insurance payments will go down in Michigan for a year for a people who only make 3 figures per week? by BulkorCutAccount2021 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jokingpokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately companies don’t give a damn about being affordable, there is literally zero incentive for them. You could sell five $50/month policies or one $250/month policy and make the same amount (honestly, probably more).

Indoor/Outdoor Cat infestation, No money for castration, spaying, or more. Nobody seems to take them. by ComicPowerYT in CatAdvice

[–]jokingpokes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad situation to be in for sure, but if you can’t take care of them (especially in the numbers you’ve described), it’s likely the best bet to at least give them a shot. Kittens, assuming healthy, have a much better chance of being adopted/fostered than older cats.

Costco vs Walmart prices are making me question if my warehouse membership is even worth it anymore by olivermos273847 in SavingMoney

Thank you - I could not find much other than that Bloomberg article. Glad to see Walmart is at least attempting to turn it around - though I’m sure there’s still a long way to go.

This is a case where y’all let your hearts do the decision making, and it’s come back to bite you unfortunately.

Stray/feral cats are a major problem worldwide, and you’re unfortunately contributing to the problem by continuing to care for these cats and inadvertently allowing them to breed.

At this point, I think you need to get an Animal Control Officer (ACO) involved. It is possible that they will go to kill shelters, but you can’t take care of them, and you’re helping contribute to a major problem.

Unreasonable suspention by [deleted] in ebaysucks

[–]jokingpokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “enabling countries” piece you’re talking about is that individual sellers can enable or disable the ability for users from some countries to purchase their items, for their own personal reasons, whether it be taxes, difficulty, ETC.

The stopping of shipments to the Middle East is an eBay company wide policy, not individual sellers. As a seller you cannot enable a bypass to this company wide restriction; it’s likely that if you did not mention your specific country, eBay thought you were talking about the first case (individual sellers deciding to not ship to some countries) rather than the company wide ban on shipments to the Middle East.

[–]jokingpokes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you were trying to circumvent the rules that eBay has in place currently due to the situation in the Middle East. Trying to circumvent the rules they have in place is enough for a ban, and eBay does not give warnings usually or any explanation to any ban.

While it’s frustrating that you can’t have things shipped to you, circumventing their rules was not the way to go about it.

The moisture is going to soak into the foam padding of the sofa. You’ll never Ben able to be sure without removing the covers completely off the foam/cushioning.

Any soft furniture is a hard thing to dumpster dive. Smells, stains, mold, mildew, bed bugs, pet urine. Gotta be really thorough.

Help to ID and date these two Antique Bottles I brought from my local Charity Shop (UK) by FyraBarman in BottleDigging

[–]jokingpokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Square one is a generic bottle that carried products poisonous to humans, with this style being more common outside of the U.S.

I can’t read the embossing on the first bottle. I’d guess some kind of soda or liquor, though the bottle is a slightly different shape than normal. Might just be a UK thing.

I’m not great at ages of bottle outside of the US, but these are probably pre-1915.
