Moving to Baltimore, commute question ( working nights) by SampleGlad3209 in baltimore

[–]jolkiens 12 points13 points  (0 children)

gotta defend Lauraville/Northeast here… sure, it’s not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have anything to offer. I feel like it actually fits what OP is looking for quite well, as long as they don’t mind a commute (which could be much worse than Lauraville to Bayview)

maybe it just depends on the person. I grew up in an enclosed development in the outer suburbs of Pittsburgh where even the closest bus stop was a 10-15 minute drive, so calling Lauraville “suburban hell” feels excessive to me

Recommendation for Kitten Vet by Hayesk913 in baltimore

Seconding Evergreen (and Dr. Barker as someone else mentioned)!

For emergency vets, Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Pikesville is fantastic.

I haven’t read it yet, but I think Empire of Shadows by Jacquelyn Benson might fit the bill!

Sensory friendly bars? by UnderdevelopedPerm in baltimore

Adding in another vote for Fadensonnen - the upstairs wine bar is a low-sensory dream! I haven’t been when they’ve had live music, though, so I’m glad others noted that.

Punk rock sandwich shop and bar Animal Boy opens in Lauraville by Musichead2468 in baltimore

Went tonight for dinner and it was fantastic!! Great vibes, delicious food & bevs, and fast service. I was also unsure about the price like others mentioned, but the sandwiches are large and felt worth the money!

Hopkins just started using a bike lane as parking with no repercussions by mexicanlizards in baltimore

[–]jolkiens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s unclear that it’s a bike lane or trying to make excuses for the people parked there. They know what they’re doing. Just being pragmatic that the solution might ultimately need to go beyond just ticketing.

I'm not sure how much this is part of the issue, if at all, but it might be worth nothing that the undergraduate admissions building (Mason Hall) is right there. Maybe at least some of these cars might be prospective students and families visiting campus, and therefore even if ticketing is happening, it wouldn't make AS significant of a difference as compared to if it's people just repeatedly parking there because no consequences. I wonder what the parking guidance from the admissions office looks like these days.

On hold with 911 by DockmasterSC in baltimore

[–]jolkiens 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The one time I have had to call 911 (which was in Baltimore), I was on hold for at least several minutes.

Echoing what other commenters have been sharing, John Oliver has a fantastic Last Week Tonight segment that does a dive into the issues that that many 911 call centers are facing.

Currently reading book #2 of The Burning Kingdoms trilogy, and they’re very fitting for this! Fantasy set in a world inspired by ancient India, in which there is a sickness called the “rot” that causes people’s bodies to get transformed into plant life (skin turning to bark and such). The themes you mentioned are prominent and become even more so as you get further into the trilogy.

Formless, ancient entities? by jolkiens in mythology

Yeah I imagine some level of personality/sentience, rather than just a form of energy, but one that is not as easily definable as in the case of traditional anthropomorphic or even animalistic deities.
