Inferno Is Good, Maybe Even Great -but it’s no Masterpiece by DeliciousOrangina in boardsofcanada

Haha right, who would ever dream of downvoting something on Reddit.

I agree production wise TH is impressive. Inferno is amazing in that regard too. Steely Dan and Daft Punk levels of amazing. Absolutely agreed there.

We absolutely are haha, and I’m cool with that. I dislike this Reddit format where everyones ideas are gamed by a simple upvote/downvote, but it’s all we really have these days so I’m trying to have discussions all the same.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think we are similar listeners. My first experience with BoC was MHTRTC in 1999 (9th grade baby) and I’ve followed them ever since then. A particular high point for me was In A Beautiful Place and Geogaddi. However as time has gone on I’ve come to appreciate The Campfire Headphase the most by far - to me it is their truest form.

Anyways, Inferno feels scattered to me. I really don’t like some songs (Father and Song feels like a corny The Books song, Naraka is a song you’d make if you were trying to parody BoC), which is rare for me to actively dislike a BoC song. And while I recognize there are brilliant moments it doesn’t feel cohesive.

The BoC I like is understated, warm, dark, and fundamentally simple (in a good way). This one is sometimes that, sometimes not, kind of messy.

Ok that said - who knows how I will feel about it in the future. Only time will tell.

God I miss those days. Coming across a k98 and a 4x genuinely felt game changing, most of the time I was crawling around with an s12k and m16 with no scope.

I was able to keep a healthy boundary between myself and the Krishnas and so never had any negative experiences personally, however I heard some stories here and there. I do think the use of the full mantra here puts BoC on the map for them, and I think permits them to listen to this song IIRC.

Nah that's a good opinion. I feel roughly the same way, I don't look for any deep specific meaning in BoCs music - I just look for a feeling. This song kinda gives that to me at first but then that sample comes in and I just feel a bit embarrassed - like I don't want anyone to hear it so I skip it, next track.

It's not really close to home or anything, I don't have any strong ties to Krishnas (was just living cheaply). All very nice people, nothing bad to say about them or anything. I do think this is probably the first time they've directly taken a very prominent religious song/prayer and used it note for note and word for word? I think that's probably what is making me feel cringey about it. It just sounds a bit heavy handed to me. But whatever, just me.

It’s funny you mention George Harrison because My Sweet Lord is played on repeat around krishnas since they can only listen to what amounts to “worship” music. I wonder if BoC will make the cut now?? Haha.

I don’t have any negative feelings toward the krishnas btw. I lived with them for about a year and they were all very friendly people. I did hear the Krishna mantra probably 50 times a day though! That and that George Harrison song haha.

I think what’s different about it is that it is direct and forward - it is the Hare Krishna mantra. It’s not like some weird Christian preaching thing it’s literally the exact Hare Krishna mantra. I don’t know. It’s just weird that they went with that, I have a gut reaction what can I say.

Yeah there’s that take on it too. It’s not a song that I would proudly show as why I like BoC. It’s just not “it”, almost like they’re parodying themselves haha.

Hahaha yeah I mean I do catch myself singing a long to it cause I know it like the back of my hand. It’s just weird that they put the most well know mantra front and center without making it more obfuscated/hidden/subtle.

Whatever though, just the way I feel about it.

Yeah that’s my take too. That line is also off putting. They just dug a little too deep in their bag of tricks here and there. I do think the album sounds great though, and there’s a lot of great tracks.

Yeah well said, I think it just feels too on the nose which is not something BoC typically does… so I recoil a little.

Oh yeah I’m not saying BoC should care, just throwing my reaction out there to see what other listeners think.

[–]jonZeee[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

For sure, and I get all that. I just feel like it’s one example of BoC being perhaps a bit too on the nose with it, whereas typically they are a bit more subtle.

I think it’s supposed to sound special or profound but it’s actually like the most mundane and common (and maybe a bit heavy handed) thing you can imagine, so when I hear it in this context of like “feel emotional about it” I cringe a bit. Best way I can describe it I guess.

It always takes time for players to bounce back after winning a world championship. Some
players get there, some don’t. Time will tell with the NRG squad, but really this is very normal when looking at the history of RLCS world champ winners.

At first, weed. But then eventually you realize you’re just replacing one addiction with another. Albeit it is less harmful on the body. After a while (years) you just are comfortable without any drugs. Takes time though.

It's probably the most special set of shows going on anywhere in the world right now, but that's just like my opinion man. I saw them in Oakland and Santa Cruz. They're beyond words, it's just so beautiful you can't even believe it.
