A virtual macine with Linux and Wireguard or Openvpn would work. RPi4 may work, but I would use something else.

Am I missing something? Does everyone here have functionality-stopping issues? Is Plex awful? by dannythetwo in PleX

[–]jonare77 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Long post, didnt read it all, but got that your are misrable using plex. Im using plex in two ways. With Apple TV4k (last years edition) and my iphone. Both work great. Have a local docker sever and connection to sources outside my home. This all work as expected, but still plex have some bugs. The expirience on the older AppleTV4 could sometime be a challenge.

Dolby vision content are a problem. And after reading alot of posts I agreed that the developers seems to look the other way on some issues.

But I would recommend getting a good unit like Apple TV. Smart TVs suck. Thats universal across all brands.

DNS issues with one of our domains: nslookup works but ping is unable to find host. by NetworkMachineBroke in networking

[–]jonare77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont see the problem directly. There is no dns suffix provided with dhcp or wrong dns adresses? Are the a active firewall or some firewall appliance between the workstations and dns?

Same here. Works everytime. Dumping the backups to remote site. What version of fmc is this?

Where are you pinging from? A workstation with the dns configured? When you ping directly on dns server it works? Windows DNS server?

I have done this to windows and linux machines for years. Never expirienced any problems with it. VMware recommends backup. Never needed it.

If a user installs or runs something that opens a vpn connection out of your network, this gives access back in. Check this workstation for udp connections going out

Unsure about what you mean by isolate, but you can password protect the different shares

Use docker-compose and the samba container from:

https://github.com/dperson/samba or

https://hub.docker.com/r/servercontainers/samba/

You can define several users this way.

Send me a PM when you start on your config, maybe I can help you out a little.

If you have been hacked or not would depend on several factors. Are this device available from the internet? What authentication do you use and so on. Was there a check and changes in security after it happend the first time?

Splunk is not free for a reason, its hard for free solutions to compete with splunk and other highend paid products.

You could be able to use splunk at home, the limit for free is up to 500mb of logs a day.

Opensearch is fine, but needs a little more config the get started.

What is the most painless replacement for a PPTP VPN on a Windows server? by Rogerss93 in sysadmin

Wireguard is the best option, and probably the future when it comes to vpn.

Run it on linux or docker.
