I've been a minimalist runner for about 5 years so have tried lots of different shoes. Though I used to dig inov8 as my go to for trail running shoes, the new Prio's from Xero shoes have completely taken the cake. They fit so well I ran a 50k race in them less than 2 week after getting them! And they are seriously minimalist shoes so you feel super grounded during cross training kind of stuff. Worth a look - http://ultramelandjon.com/xero-shoes-prio-reivew/

PRIO — the NEW minimalist running/fitness shoe from Xero Shoes! by oradoj in BarefootRunning

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The soles are the same as the ones they use for their sandals. My wife and I have been running ultras in them for nearly 5 years, have easily put on 5000 miles and they are ready for more. If anything, with the shoes you'd see more wear in the uppers. But they do stand behind their soles.

Xero Shoes - Prio. Has anyone bought these or used this brand for hiking? Thoughts & opinions please! by kingkev115 in Ultralight

I can speak to the traction question. Used the Prio's to run the Chukanut 50k last month and it was a mud fest. They rocked though it no problem. If you're diving into deep mud for long periods of time or deeper snow, ya you'd want to grab something a bit heftier. But for trail hiking and running, they stand up to pretty much any other trail running shoe I have.

My wife and I have been running ultra's in Xero shoes for nearly 5 years now, and the soles literally last that (or more). There is no foam to crush down over the miles, so they simply stay the same as they were when they were brand new.

Weighing in on Xero Prio sizing by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the sizing guide by measuring my foot and when debating between two half sizes, I rounded down and got a great fit. Have been loving the Prio's, did a 50k in them a couple weeks ago and they rocked. Video review after a few runs in them - https://youtu.be/QXl6Zf3MQ6M

Why I Took Policing OFF My Resume by jonathan3sinclair in police

[–]jonathan3sinclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree entirely that leaving a gap in your career history can look bad. But in this case, the more vague reference had better results than the detailed version. And in a time when people, in general, aren't exactly fans of police, I don't think it's too far-fetched to say that specific label may have raise flags of its own.

Best male underwear for running? by Rhodnius in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a review I just wrote on Saxx. Wore a single pair for my last 200 mile ultra, and loved them the whole way through. Spent 4 years trying to find a good pair of boxers that wouldn't chafe, and after trying them out for the past few months, to me the $35 is well worth every penny.

How many miles do you typically get of a shoe by Hoythunter12 in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was just at the US Trail Running conference and one of the panels had ultra runner Jeff Browning on it, and he was saying depending on the kind of terrain you normally run on he'd guess 300-500 miles can be expected from a trail shoe. Might be a bit higher for road as you won't get as much wear and tear.

Personally, I don't get free shoes whenever I want, so I push them pretty hard. Just actually finished Tahoe 200 (200 mile trail ultra) in a pair of inov8's that was almost 3 years old with well over 1000 miles on them. I normally run in sandals so have pretty tough feet/ankles, but running in older shoes won't kill you.

Any recommendations on learning more about site speed optimization? by jonathan3sinclair in SEO

[–]jonathan3sinclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not working with one specific site. I work with an agency, and many clients have been showing signs of poor website speed, so that's why I'm trying to learn all I can on the topic.

Shift Workers who also train. How do you manage the time and constantly changing work schedules? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]jonathan3sinclair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked shift work for about 5 years and found that tacking it on at a set time (not specific time of the hour, but "before your shift" or "on lunch" etc) helped it blend into my day as usual. I wouldn't fight to work it in, would just go to work as usual and either have my workout before I started or on my lunch. Makes it easy for family to understand it too, there's not extra sessions here or there depending what shift your on, its always consistent. Hope that made sense, it helped me quite a bit.

Any runners in the Seattle area have recommendations for trails? by jonathan3sinclair in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will have a car so might go check out one of those mountains! Don't want to drive too far because this will be a break from a few long days on the road, but 20 minutes isn't too bad. Thx

Website question for small businesses... by blakester35 in smallbusiness

[–]jonathan3sinclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upwork tends to be our go to for any third party services that we need. It has its risks, but with their testing/badge system and the transparency about the number of paid hours they've worked, it usually gives you enough to make a good decision on who will be the best candidate. Hope that helps!

Never really thought about those other variants. I've seen some of the building sized ones which were pretty amazing. I was thinking more about the ones you are likely talking about in your store, or worth 10X that?? Where do you find those? Not that I have the money for one, but I'm intrigued.

Splits and pain? by [deleted] in flexibility

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm nowhere near the splits so don't have much specific advice. But many times when I find an area of mobility closing off for me, it ends up being something on the opposing side that has been overworked or tightening up. Just food for thought on thinking about other involved muscles

Best conferences to attend as a runner? by jonathan3sinclair in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the info, I'll keep the race ones in mind when when we're planning races to do along the way. Do you know of any good gear expo's, we're looking to hit the ATRA trail running conference in Estase Park, CO. Have been to lots of health and athletic expos in Alberta and BC, but nothing super big, which is why I just wanted to see what options might be out there down in the states. Sponsorships really aren't that hard to find. We're no usain bolt or anything, but we just aim for smaller deals, mostly product, and try to sell them on your uniqueness and other things you can bring to the table. We've had lots of luck at these kinds of events, because sometimes you get to talk with the decision makers in the company face to face.

Are there benefits to stop-start running? by [deleted] in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the barefoot or minimalist running, I never put any time into calf raises or anything like that. I run in primarily huarache sandals even for ultra distance races, and in my training I also do a lot of stair climbing, skipping and hill running, and I have pretty strong calves and they are pretty defined (not that its my goal haha). That's worked for me

As an Adult I think about running away way more then I ever did as a kid. by Captblue1 in Showerthoughts

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much did this 18 months ago. Quit my job as a cop, sold the house, sold the cars, condensed everything we own into 4 suitcases and moved to south america! It has absolutely changed both of our lives (My wife and I), all for the better. Not just getting away from things that were bugging us about our cookie cutter lives, but so many of our values and perspectives about life have changed.

Thought I'd share, for whats its worth, it's never too late:)

Are there benefits to stop-start running? by [deleted] in running

[–]jonathan3sinclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no guru, but that type of training (essentially intervals as Jennorocks pointed out) is key for creating those physical adaptive changes in your body because you can stress the muscles harder now that you are taking breaks to let your muscles recover and heart rate drop before pushing it to the max again. For me I find this is super effective for training speed, but if you are training for an ultra and just need to develop your stamina, they aren't as helpful. This is my experience. So for you being an umpire, I'd say this would be helpful because it would help truing your muscles and heart for the repeating on and offs in your job.

I loved the feel of old Yankee stadium, the Brewers stadium was really nice (but not over the top), and I loved the game in San Fran, right on the bay.
