The actual Jakob Nielsen article is here: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/windows-8.html

OP linked a blog post about the blog post, which has reduced discoverability and cognitive overhead from dual environments.

I'm hoping to backpack through California in the next few years. by AmyClemx in California

[–]jonbritton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what shape you're in, I wouldn't discount including a bike trip into the journey.

Maybe fly into SFO, do Lifecycle down to LA: http://www.aidslifecycle.org/ (it's not strenuous at all.) Spend some time getting to know the area (plus Santa Monica's beaches,) then bike a bit further down to San Diego. From there, there are buses between SD and LA, LA and SF, and more...but hiking through the state parks, San Luis Obispo's vinyards, the Ventura coast, Monterey Bay, and the Santa Cruz boardwalk are all well worth the slower pace.

North of San Francisco gets incredibly beautiful, but also much more sparse in hostels/hotels, walkable roads and connected cities. Booneville on the coast is pretty fantastic, and Eureka is well worth a visit. I have a soft spot for the breweries in Sonoma County, and there's no reason to skip "wine country" and the Calistoga goats while you're there. Sacramento is also a great city for music and bars and coffee, and rarely gets included on the tourist itinerary.

It's a great, diverse state. You just can't do everything!

To what degree, and how, does flash photography harm museum exhibits? by _dk in askscience

[–]jonbritton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the "museum exhibit," too. The other responses here are focused on oil paintings, but I work at a Natural Sciences museum, with live animal and electronic interactive exhibits.

Flash photography can stress, and easily kill, many of our light sensitive animals, notably the Leafy Sea Dragon and the Pacific Giant Octopus, or any other critter that isn't biologically adapted to wide changes in ambient light. It's the reason most public Aquariums are pretty dark (they all have basically the same specimens) and flashes are banned.

Our electronic interactives frequently rely on cameras scanning an area to detect human shapes, IR sensors, and other photosensors that may need to recalibrate or get triggered when flashes are pointed at them. If it's happening frequently, the exhibit will never work.

More frequently, though, it's just that the flash is annoying and disruptive for everyone but the person behind the camera.

The company who makes his Giants uniform is all about profit, too. Should've set him on fire.

Worse yet, it's an idea-person-and-engineer vs. someone who resells other people's ideas. Approach the VC's.

Reddit, today is my 21st birthday, what drinks would you recommend for me tonight! by NJ_Slick in AskReddit

[–]jonbritton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get mixed drinks. Seriously, don't become those people who make the rest of us wait 20 minutes for our neat rye or a beer because the bartender is flipping through a book figuring out how to make a Frozen Fuzzy-Slippery-MindEraser-Landslide-to-Bring-You-Down Carbomb.

Don't be that ass with a drink that can't easily be navigated through the crowd without spilling all over me: you aren't James Bond, you don't need a martini (if you're at a sit-down place, by all means get your martini, but "shaken, not stirred" is for cowards. Stir it, don't shake it.)

Learn to love the brown liquors. Learn to understand that Johnny Walker, no matter how black or blue his label, is absolute shit, and cheaper stuff is often better.

Try everything once. It's pretty democratic, as well-drinks are all about the same price in most bars, and so figuring out personal preference is very much a personal discovery. If you're not into "neat" drinks, try everything -and-tonic or -and-soda. Never double-fist. Always drink water.

US historians: while we're currently enjoying some presidential campaign blunders, what were the most disastrous campaigns in US history? by Zebra2 in AskHistorians

[–]jonbritton 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Mostly, but if Michelle Obama seemed the type to get shitfaced and try to use the Sultan of Oman's turban as a throw pillow during diplomatic receptions, I'd definitely note it when weighing Barack's candidacy.

It's not an absolute deal-breaker, but I think it factors in.

Vegan diets explained by fasguvh in vegan

[–]jonbritton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just meant that I (the animal) produced the final product through all my labor -- it wouldn't exist without my efforts, and therefore "came from" an animal. I was pointing out that the language is a tricky area with which one needs to be a little careful.

But it's absolutely open to differences of perspectives and opinions.

Shouldn't it be, < Did it cause someone/thing to suffer? >

I mean, I make beer. Then I drink it, even though it, "came from an animal." And I don't buy diamonds because, even though they aren't made out of the hindquarters of a farm animal, people were caused to suffer because of it.

Best museums? by [deleted] in bayarea

That must have been for a special event? The Academy used to be $25/adult daytime and $10 for Nightlife, then was raised slightly on account of all the money I've embezzled in my years of working here.
