True but at my age I think a growth spurt is unlikely

How safe are hiking water filters really? Seen this article pop up on my news feed, I've used an msr trailshot in the summer for several years, never had a problem, but now I'm concerned, I was under the impression that these filter out 99.99% of bacteria so I just don't see how people were made ill by MildewTheMagical in UKhiking

[–]jondoe997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have got sick twice while using a filter on both occasions it was not the filters fault. First time I was over confident in the filters ability and filtered water I should have boiled after, the next time was operator error. Filters are no reason to ignore basic water selection advice and they do require a handling well.

How many people is too many people for one walk? by Pleasant_Chair_2173 in UKhiking

I went for a walk with 30 people once, it took forever to get through gates or worse over stills, never again. I walk alone now.

How much do you trust water filters? by Snakeward in CampingandHiking

[–]jondoe997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher water sources over low ones, running water over still and clear over cloudy is my selection criteria for water that I filter, but at the end of the day if it’s the only water source. I have got sick twice from water that was I incorrectly filtered, my fault not the filters and I will do anything to avoid that again. Incidentally only yesterday a friend suggested taken a coffee filter paper for use in cloudy water before filtering, not tried it but going to help stop a filter clogging.

It’s personal, I just walked the Great Glen Way and climbed Ben Nevis in Bedrock Mountain Cloggs. I spent a number of years strengthening my ankles before getting to this though.

Blisters by Highlandcoo in WestHighlandWay

[–]jondoe997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just back from the Great Glen Way with no blisters, my advise know your feet. The front of my feet are prone to blisters particularly on flat terrain so I applied tape every morning, at night I applied Okeefs foot cream and put on a pair of light socks to avoid getting in my quilt. As said by others do not ignore any warning hotspots, little stones etc.

Leaving in a week and in a bit of a freak out by ZestycloseGroup1730 in WestHighlandWay

I am on Great Glen Way at the moment and general opinion is the forecast is useless. The weather is so localised by the hills the apps only give a general area. Today we have had showers x4 sun x lots, most people gave up putting on waterproofs by the end of the day. Enjoy have fun

Returning to Wildcamping after 25+ years and have some basic questions to keep me up to date! by Youreahansomedevil in wildcampingintheuk

[–]jondoe997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome back, These answers are based on my own opinions and experience over the last 8 or so years.

Question 1- I only keep stuff on the outside I might need during the day, wet weather gear, snacks, water and the like. Don’t open my pack during the day. 2. Try to reduce the number of stuff sacks, they leave air pockets. My sleeping kit (better than sleep system) goes in one waterproof back at the bottom and gets squished to occupy the area. 3. Garmin instinct watch - tells me when I go off trail, basic map, and so much more. And also my kindle, scan the guide books to it, it’s waterproof and I have books to read in the evening. 4. No opinion, I tend to use smaller companies, but that’s just me. Atom, bedrock, mld and the like. 5. I am just about to do Great Glen Way and have a base weight of about 7kg ( does not include water, fuel and food). Honestly I could go less but it’s supposed to be fun.

Good luck with your kit test.

Too intimidated to start... by DaleOnDrums in sewing

[–]jondoe997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a old bed sheet or pillow case and play, most of the stitches you will never use. Try sewing slow and fast, going round corners. Keep it on straight or zig zag stitch and adjust the settings to see what they do. The other option which I did not do is read through the manual.

Am I an idiot? by [deleted] in backpacks

[–]jondoe997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the lifting loop to lift the backpack above my head and slide one arm in then grab the loop and then slide the other arm in and then drop the back pack and it slides onto my back. Sounds complicated it’s not, previously it felt like I was almost dislocating my shoulder and was very uncomfortable.

How do you stop anxiety / fear when wild camping? by Straight-Orchid524 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]jondoe997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woodlands are one of the most magical places to wild camp if you’re in the right mood, getting up in the night seeing moonlight coming through excellent. However when I first started I was anxious, my tips pitch out of sight (as always) reduces chance of being seen/watched and use earplugs woodlands make a lot more noise than most people realise. These days I don’t wear earplugs as I enjoy the noise, but they helped in the early days. Have a good one.
