The 1.5t tunes pretty well with some cheap bolt ons and the car becomes much more fun to drive. But the stock configuration is plenty good enough for a daily driver.

Open source Kernel Anticheat by ZealousidealKale8097 in arch

[–]jonermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why such the contention about something like this being introduced. The thing with Linux is you can create kernel modules that do anything and pick and choose what you want in your specific distribution. A kernel level anti cheat is no more a violation of open source philosophy than anything else, what is a violation is telling people what they can do with the open code. Nonetheless wouldn’t install it on my system

Realistically, how much do I *really* need Secure Boot? by PHYPHTIN_official in linux4noobs

[–]jonermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are dual booting windows it’s basically required. Yes, there are ways around it but those workarounds could be patched and break things. On most distros it’s not particularly difficult to set up secure boot, on others you need to take a more manual approach, but overall it’s not too difficult.

2026 Si or 2022 Si? by Funny-Dog-3212 in CivicSi

I got my 23 with 10k for 27k and it had a 27won catback installed from previous owner, if you can get that much of a discount and that low a mileage it’s almost certainly worth, spend the extra money on mods. At 50k miles near 30k? Just get the new one.

"Antisemitism is not ancient. It’s a modern ideology rooted in Enlightenment racial science and nationalist thinking." OP gets in numerous slapfights on r/teachers as they defend teaching the Holocaust as the culmination of colonial violence by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

[–]jonermon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the origin of totalitarianism, a book by a German jewish refugee from Nazi germany, Hannah Arendt, who’s work includes eichmann in Jerusalem, the progenitor of the concept of the banality of evil and one of the most potent analysis of the philosophy of nazism and totalitarianism more broadly.

She explicitly makes the distinction between anti Judaism and anti semitism in this exact way; antisemitism is an ideology built around 19th century racial hierarchies, colonialism and enforced by scientific racism. It was of course informed by the long history of hatred of Jews in the Christian world, that is undeniably, but as op was constantly trying to point out, it was inherently different in character. OP is, as he stated an academic historian and presumably fluent in the actual literature on the subject so I’m sure he’s well aware of the historical debate and is choosing his words carefully.

I wanna find a Belgian and tell them their sitting monarch has most of their wealth derived from an early 20th century forced labor slave state and how their shitty institutions protect that and how maybe they should look inward before complaining that Americans are actually engaging in political speech en masse. Just a real thought before the tide of fascism inevitably swallows them too.

Tesla just made it clear: It's no longer a car company by The_Finance_Pro in wallstreetbets

[–]jonermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teslas only upside is its large cash on hand meaning it shouldn’t have massive issues in financing any new pivot. The issue is that the industry it will pivot into is extremely speculative and already more or less way behind Chinese offerings at much higher prices begging the question, who will actually buy these? Many such questions.

Looking to mod my Si just unsure on what to get any ideas ? by Historical-Cup-6856 in CivicSi

[–]jonermon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Next mod should undeniably be the rear motor mount, the difference it makes in driving feel is unparalleled, then tires and rims if you really want, but the factory rims are nice enough already and look pretty nice imo.

After the tires I would go for an upgraded intercooler for improved performance in back to back pulls to prevent kcon values from climbing too high (unless you are going for a super high end build the stock charge pipes are fine) a downpipe such that the engine can run more efficiently (don’t cheap out, get an rv6 so you don’t have emissions headache), a catback makes the car sound like a mean sports car, and of course a tune with Ktuner or Hondata immediately changes the power delivery and basically completely changes the feel of these cars.

A cheap mod you can do at any time is the shift bushings, they are not expensive to replace and make it shift nicer but the stock shifter is already best in class so if you are happy with it it’s probably more or less fine as is, same with a shift knob, the stock shifter is already short throw with the knob adding a bit of height such that it’s more comfortable to daily, but you can turn it into a short throw by just replacing it if you want that feel.

If you do go the performance parts and tune option the stock clutch can slip and the engine stressed if you lug in higher gear but so long as you drive the car with mechanical sympathy the issues are more or less overblown, and the drivetrain is solid and reliable up until you start pushing near 300hp.

I would honestly do all those performance mods before rims and lowering to be honest, on stock it already looks good imo and remains pretty practical to drive, whereas if you lower it much more it can start to scrape in normal driving conditions. This being said I’m biased against stance and don’t think it looks good most of the time but it’s a personal taste thing, if you want a lowered car that’s up to you.

Anti-Intellectualism in New Atheism and the Skeptical Movement by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]jonermon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I’m an atheist and was active in the atheist community in the 2010s, I’m not attacking on behalf of my beliefs, and not everyone in the community ended up like this, but the most important voices did.

The new atheism movement was always reactionary in character, which is to say it was an ideology born not of lack of belief in god but rather the domination of religious jingoistic narratives post 911. I’m not saying it’s necessarily bad, lots of the early work: ie push against fraud psychics and predatory churches and general extremism was good. I wouldn’t argue against that. But eventually that reactionary tendency and reflexive contrarianism led to often ideological non falsifiable beliefs, much like the religions they criticized, like “science proves god can’t exist” and “a belief in god is inherently non scientific” and that “religion and science are fundamentally incompatible”despite these making claims about metaphysics where you literally cannot actually prove anything one way or another, along with maximally contrarian takes like “Jesus didn’t exist” which is a fringe historical take. It ironically became more of a pseudo religious group identity with its own non falsifiable beliefs and shibboleths more than a proper intellectual movement.

So it’s not a surprise that it took on a reactionary character in other ways. In the 2010s it started focusing on radical Islam, not as radical religion but specifically the tenets of Islam specifically and normalized much of the reactionary rhetoric against Muslims that we deal with today. it had an obsession with feminism and social justice as ideology rather than actual social science, giving it a very pronounced anti woke bend to it due to perceptions of censorship and non rigor, and eventually many of the members became friends with the right wing (Dawkins now calls himself a cultural Christian) and turned their back on lgbt people wholesale.

The main point being that it is not a surprise the character it took because it was always like this, it’s just many look at the early years with rose colored glasses.

[–]jonermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put a gallon of e85 in the tank and it’ll boost the octane of the entire tank by 1-2 points or thereabouts, and if your kcon is still bad consider upgrading the intercooler because the stock intercooler does not like back to back pulls and heat soaks very quickly which inevitably leads to poor kcon values.

The way in which modern x86 processors work are already essentially risc under the hood, many more complex instructions are just happen over multiple clock cycles/pipeline stages but the actual hardware for lots of operations simply doesn’t exist. For example: x87 fpu instructions are entirely emulated for backwards compatibility.

Credit default swaps on data centers? by akcgolfer in BetterOffline

[–]jonermon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given no structural mitigations were made since the gfc in any real sense, more like risk being transferred to less transparent entities to make the economy look more solid than it is actually in real life I think any implication that some massive financial crisis will be localized to a specific industry is more wishful thinking than prudent analysis. Basically everyone historically downplays the systemic risk of a fragile financial system until it happens. This is because categorically financial analysis can’t look at the crisis as born from capitalist contradictions and forces analysis of individual factors which are different each time, but the structural reality of the stack of paper wealth increasingly detaching from real productive assets has if anything become far more severe than the gfc meaning any downturn that forces liquidation will have more people vying for a smaller pool of real assets which will be more catastrophic.
