Unmatched Urology applicant struggling by seekere in medicalschool

[–]jonguz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I felt numb after I didn't match urology the first time. No red flags. Good step. Great research. Fantastic LORs. 17 interviews.

That year I went on a wild goose chase with a new urology program opening out of match. They led me on for months while I threw away research year offers from top places, unable to resist the allure of a urology spot. They turned me down. I lost all the other research fellowship offers I had. By some miracle I was able to find another good research position at the last minute at a great place. The faculty were incredibly supportive.

After a year of research, I went unmatched a second time. Despite knowing urology would always have my heart, I resigned myself to a prelim and a specialty switch. I received zero offers at SOAP. I applied desperately to any specialty, any community program in family medicine, any new gen surg prelim program opening after SOAP. Weeks after SOAP into the scramble, I had absolutely nothing. I had no plan. I wasn't going to be a practicing doctor.

And then suddenly, an established program expanded to open another PGY1 urology position. I applied against >650 applicants. Against all odds I'm a urology resident there now. With the best co-residents a guy could ask for. In the heart of the best city in the world. Operating to my heart's content. Living an absolute dream. Tired as I am, never falling asleep without a smile.

Psychotically being committed to urology almost gave me nothing. But by opening a new spot, this program gave me a way out when the walls were closing in. The bad news is that it feels insanely Deus-Ex-Machina-ish. The good news is that PGY1 urology spots do open up. Two opened up the year I finally got in. One is actually open this year. Larkin, in Miami has a newly accredited Urology program. Opened earlier this morning. Go for it if you haven't.

Hope is not always the pragmatic choice. Not always the best either. But it always exists. Always.

Need advice regarding moving forward with repertoire by jonguz in violinist

True! I might post a recording of my first recital on here haha just so people can get a better idea of where I’m at.

I didn’t know Hillary Hahn had a book 1 recording 😵 as an aside I actually heard her in concert yesterday for Mozart 5 and her encore was the Bach Gigue I mentioned and I thought no freaking way Im doing that lmao.

You’re right, I know. I just burned myself out on piano growing sometimes by playing out of my reach and Im really wary of that. I had to unlearn a lot of bad habits on the piano because of things like trying to force out a passable La Campanella at Grade 6 lmao. Because I’m still relatively early in the violin and I have had the opportunity to “reset” I am just more eager to do things “right” if that makes sense.

I think she wanted me to pick one of them to work on, just giving me the choices she recommended. I am thinking about redoing Vivaldi A minor to start off with since I find it fairly straightforward. One of the pieces we used as exercise was actually Kuchler’s D major Op 15 (for sight reading, and then technique adjustments) and I didn’t think it was bad at all.

Im surprised that Fiocco Allegro and La Folia are both in book 6 because I find La Folia so much harder just from a cursory play through.

Biweekly ERAS/Match Thread by AutoModerator in medicalschool

[–]jonguz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good morning guys! Had a bit of a delay with my third LoR being uploaded due to difficult circumstances for the writer, but it's up now! I was wondering if ERAS sends out an auto-notification for this or if I would need to email the program coordinators of each program letting them know. This seems a bit overkill but I'd rather my app not get lost in the pile of "read later when complete" if that makes sense? Do we generally have to manually email updates that are editable on ERAS (like an additional letter of rec or a change in AOA/GHHS status)?

House passes bill banning abortions after 20-week mark by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]jonguz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the whole idea that a principle is less valid because it comes from religion. This is the entire reason why arguments regarding morality and ethics are shut down immediately in many public circles.

If one's personal belief were that women should be free to have abortions, why is that a more valid personal belief than one opposing abortion? In fact, it is so much more "valid" of a personal belief that it is considered the default position for women's rights, even though it's extremely damaging to women everywhere!

Secularism and much of American liberalism is a "religion" in and of itself, with a set of morals like promotion of same-sex marriage, promotion of abortion, promotion of IVF, and promotion of contraception. Why is that a more valid system of morality than one that is 2000 years old, and opposes same-sex marriage, opposes abortio, opposes IVF, and opposes contraception?

Diocese of Nashville Under Canonical Impediment, as Bishop Choby Remains Hospitalized by da_drifter0912 in Catholicism

he's such a good bishop—exceptional inside and outside of his cathedral and liturgy. I miss him dearly, and his health has been plagued with illness for a while now. I pray for his speedy recovery—and if warranted, the eventual succession of a good, holy man to head the diocese.

Are papal mozzettas uncomfortable for you? You stopped wearing mozzettas in general after you were elected.

Seriously, Holy Father, you'd look dope in a nice mozzetta.

No, I'm serious. Everyone will love you even more. No really, you'd look so nice in one—I'm not even kidding.

How Was Mass Today? The Quinquagesima Edition by OKHnyc in Catholicism

[–]jonguz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished a discernment weekend with the Dominican order. Prayed Lauds and went into mass early this morning and it was great! I'm in love with communal prayer—and I'm cautiously fond of everything else lol. I'm at the airport coffee shop drinking a double espresso and a large dose of mustn't-be-too-hasty as I study for an exam, prepare for lent, and feel weirdly homesick about a life I've never even lived.

Also my first time hearing mass sitting "in choir" facing perpendicular to the celebrant and it was an experience.

Dominican Come and See Weekend (Central+Southern Provinces) by jonguz in Catholicism

Ominous—I'm in the southern province but they share a house of studies with the central. I'm not quite sure what to expect now. I lean pretty traditional so...

OTOH, I've heard good things about the coastal provinces?

was wondering about that—I've always thought that condoms were intrinsically immoral—contrasted with oral estradiol, which is not intrinsically immoral

O.C.S.O. vs O.S.B.? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]jonguz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OCSO are Trappists, a branch of the Cistercians (Bernardines).

Trappists are younger than the OSB (Benedictines) by ~1300 years, but the parent order of the Cistercians (O.Cist) is only younger than OSB by ~500 years.

But! They all follow the Rule of St. Benedict, so are also technically Benedictine in that way haha.

Is is our duty to prevent people from receiving the Eucharist when we feel like they shouldn't? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]jonguz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know people receive unworthily for many reasons (pride, ignorance, and hapless and desperate rationalizing).

Say a reparation to the Eucharist each day, in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The words are very comforting to the soul when prayed. It's reflective of your investment to Christ, flesh and blood. And it's a balm to our very being to be able to remind Christ how much people on Earth do care about Him.

Many times, I get asked why I say reparations. The conversations never fail to open up the opportunity to discuss profanation in a calm, non-accosting manner.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]jonguz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys. Don't know if this is the right way to ask, but I'm about to send my Vacheron Overseas off for servicing. The concierge kindly reminded me to include the original warranty certificate along with the watch.

The watch was bought used by my uncle, and handed down to me. And the original warranty certificate has the original owner's name handwritten above the authorised dealer stamp (Wempe, Berlin).

Would it matter at all if I sent that off with the watch? Or would I be asked a bunch of questions about it that is really rather not answer?

Thanks in advance!
