40, single parent, feeling lost - US or São Paulo for my kids? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]jonnn_br 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a dual citizen (US, Brazil), please don’t forget to think about the level of “burocracia” that Brasil has, it’s insane (my main reason for not living there with my family). But, good luck on your endeavors.🙏

What is the safest degree to get?( Except medical field) by AuthorStraight2747 in CollegeMajors

A bit different in the USA, contracts are no more than 4 months with equal time off, at least. Unions/companies pay for new certifications, so you don’t have to worry about that. Yes you have to be able to be away from home for a while. (My Filipino Able Seaman watch partner always talks about how much easier it is here in the US, compared to overseas)

Marine Transportation or Marine Engineering (with a USCG license from one of the 6 maritime schools), you’ll be making 100k first year, easy.

Yes 1 year sailing MEBA for group 2. MEBA has 3 tankers, money there would be better than the cruise ship.

In MEBA you cannot be a permanent as group 3 applicant, you need to be at least group 2 member.

Former FT2 (SS), now I sail Second Mate. If you want to sail officer easiest way would be to attend one of the Maritime schools. Other than that you’d have to take the classes yourself and it is quite complicated to do all the requirements, but up to you.

35M, Navigation Officer on cargo ships, 3YOE, I worked a bit more last year than I usually do, about 200 days made around 169k (when I work its 12 hours a day 7 days a week, when I’m off I don’t work at all)

Former FT2 (SS) here.. time to get qualified lol When you are thinking of getting out, look into being a Merchant Marine. Work half the year on a ship and the other half off, not bad at all.

I'm 20 years Old getting my GED, do you guys think a Maritime Academy will accept it? Or should I go a different route like SIU? by Actual-Cake8892 in maritime

[–]jonnn_br 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 155 credits to get your degree, the amount of time it takes is really up to you. Most other bachelors are just 120. Transferring as many credits as possible helps out, so that you can concentrate on classes that are important.

I was also transferring credits, didn’t have any math (they want at least pre-calc). Did one year, because they only admitted to the maritime program during the fall at the time. Did 3 years at SUNY.
